Obituary: Faye Elnora McGriff

Faye McGriff transitioned from her life on earth and joined her husband, Dewel, in heaven November 22, 2025.  She was 99 years old. She was born on May 3, 1926, in Akron, Ohio, to George Hardy Hunter and Mary Pluma Phillips. The Hunter Family was from Winston County, Alabama.  She started school in Addison, Alabama, and finished at Holly Pond High School in 1945.  She served as a substitute teacher briefly before marrying Dewel McGriff in April,1947.  Together they raised a son and three daughters and shared a wonderful life together for over 72 years, until his passing in 2019. 

She was a long-time member of New Hope #2 Baptist Church, Holly Pond.  She loved to cook, sew, quilt, and play cards. She and Dewel travelled all over the country camping for 20 plus years of their retirement.  She canned fruits and vegetables for most of her life.  She cherished her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Daisy (A.J.) Thomas, Eulene (J.D.) Harper; brothers, Ishmael (Doris) Hunter, Loyd (Ellie) Hunter; sister-in-law, Ezma (Grady) Reid; brothers-in-law, Ovis (Jo) McGriff,  Feltus (Faynell) McGriff, Milton (Louise) McGriff, Herman Barnett, Jerry White; father-in-law, James M. McGriff; and mother-in-law, Ila Hart McGriff.

She is survived by her children, Billy (Marti) McGriff, Joan (Edward) Polly, Vicky Richardson, Renee (Bobby) Greenhill; sisters-in-law, Elna Barnett, Carol White; nine grandchildren, Beth McGriff, Jim (Christy) McGriff, Melissa Polly, Chris Polly, Angela Sutton, Scott (Stacy Spears) Richardson,  Josh Greenhill,  Lauren (Matt) Feury, Anna Beth (Devan) Traglia; eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family, and friends. 

Pall bearers will be: Chris Polly, Jim McGriff, Scott Richardson, Josh Greenhill, James Brandon Sutton, and Bobby Greenhill.

Funeral service and interment will be Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at New Hope #2 Baptist Church in Holly Pond. Visitation will be 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. followed by service at 1 p.m., with Rev. Ralph McGowan officiating.
