CULLMAN, Ala. – Local nonprofit Flourish of Cullman’s Board of Directors and team members hosted a Friendsgiving dinner at Traditions Bank recently. The event focused on showing appreciation and serving parents of individuals with disabilities.
Flourish of Cullman Founder & CEO Melissa Dew, explained, “We help individuals with differing abilities to live, work and play as independently as possible in the Cullman area. We help them get jobs, we do social events, and help them to understand their place in our community.”
The nonprofit was created to ensure these individuals have the assistance needed to live their best lives after they are no longer eligible to attend public schools. Flourish social events typically center around these individuals to allow them to experience independence in adult decision-making processes and a multitude of other scenarios. Friendsgiving, Dew stated, was to allow the parents to come and meet the people that their children are around and to get to know them, as well as to be served.
“The Board of Directors provide the food for the night,” she said. “It’s also a way for them to meet the consumers that we work with a little bit better about what it is we do.”
When asked if individuals are able to volunteer, Dew said, “Oh yes ma’am. When we do socials we are always looking for volunteers and with other general things around our office also.”
