HOLLY POND, Ala. — Holly Pond senior Megan Fry graduated earlier this month and in this interview, she shared some of her favorite memories made alongside her friends and classmates during her school years, starting with her experience in the FFA.
“I competed on district, state, and national levels throughout all four years. The months of studying, the award sessions, and the people I met along the way along the way truly made every minute worth it. I would like to call myself a crucial member of Holly Pond’s FFA. I served as parliamentarian, secretary, and vice president. I participated in Floriculture, Livestock Judging, and Food Science and Technology. Throughout all of these competitions, I have met people from every single U.S. state and still remain in contact with many. The competitions were very difficult and time consuming, but the outcomes were always rewarding. This entire experience was fun, because everyone from the Holly Pond chapter act as a family. All of the laughs, inside jokes, and time spent together made the entire experience one of a kind.” Fry said. “I learned so much throughout the past four years. I learned how important it was to be a diligent and punctual individual and how to effectively communicate with all of the people I cross paths with, but above all, I learned how to trust in Christ to lead and guide me throughout the process and journey.”
Megan enjoyed every second of her time at Holly Pond and will miss the people that she spent her high school years with.
“I’ve been at Holly Pond since the very first day of kindergarten, and there really is something special about it. It’s a smaller school composed of a huge family. It is one of the places where everyone knows everyone and if you ever needed anything, it is guaranteed that someone would be there to help in an instant,” Fry said. “I’ll remember and miss my fellow students the most. It is so easy to get caught up in the possibilities of the future that you forget to take in every single moment. Graduation was the last time I will see the Holly Pond Class of 2025 together in one building. It really is bittersweet realizing that the people you once spent almost every day with for four years will never be fully together again.”
She graduated in the top 10 of her class and did it all while working almost a full-time job, juggling college classes, and being involved in many clubs. Being a part of so many clubs allowed her to help out the community and other communities in many different ways.
“It was very accomplishing. I really did put everything into my academics, despite being extremely busy. I worked almost a full-time job while also juggling dozens of classes at Wallace and Snead. In addition to that, I was heavily involved in Math Team, Key Club, FFA, Beta Club, Students for Christ, National Honor Society, and even more. Graduating at no. 3 in my class was definitely a full-circle moment. Despite the long and tough high school journey, it made me realize that it was completely worth it,” she said. “It was incredible. Being in a handful of different clubs allows you to branch out and serve your community and other communities in so many ways. I have attained over 600 service hours throughout my high school years, and I truly have gained such a full heart. Whether it was an academic club that pushes you mentally in a classroom, or a club of service that pushes you physically by volunteering and giving to others, both are very rewarding.”
Megan offered some advice to students that will be starting high school in August, and being a role model and an inspiration for younger students is important to her.
“It’s important to fully understand that only you know what’s best for you. Throughout school, you will get so many different opinions and ideas from other people. Listen to them and be respectful to those who try to advise you, but at the end of the day, it is your future and your life being determined. Put all of your trust in God’s plan, and you will be successful undoubtedly,” she said. “Being a role model for the younger generations was crucial to me. Growing up, I always looked up to the ‘big kids’, and in the blink of an eye, I became one of them myself. I made sure to focus on being the type of individual that others would think highly of, especially kids. I volunteered at the local library to teach kids how to read and interact with others while also volunteering in the school system to assist in any way possible. I feel as though it’s important to realize that even if you don’t know it, someone is always watching you. At the end of the day, you have the potential to be an influence to someone without even saying a word,” she said. “I hope I inspired them greatly. Everyone wants people to remember them in a positive light, and I think I left my mark in that perspective. I showed up in almost every way possible in order to teach, guide, and mentor the younger kids as they begin the journey I just recently completed.”
Megan will be attending Wallace State to major in Pediatric Radiation Therapy, and she earned a few scholarships to help make it happen.
“I accepted the Leadership Institutional Scholarship from Wallace, along with a Cullman Savings Scholarship, and an Ottis and Evelyn Burrow Scholarship. Receiving those scholarships was incredibly rewarding. I have been taking classes for Wallace State since my eighth-grade year, and I have completed over 15 college classes. I will also have my basics completed, so I can immediately go into my program starting in the fall. Without those scholarships, this success would not have been possible,” she said. “Wallace is close by and highly successful. The student-to-career field turn out ratio is impeccable, and they offer so many different pathways in order to help a multitude of people achieve their future goals.”
God has played a major role in Megan’s life. She got baptized earlier this year and shared one of her favorite Bible verses.
“God has played such a crucial role in my life. Over the past couple of years, I have really matured and grown in my walk with Christ. I am now a member of Temple Baptist Church and am joining my church’s choir to better serve the Lord. I was baptized on April 6th of this year, and I am still learning how to fully trust Christ in all I do. I think it is important to give all thanks and praise to Him. My journey throughout school and all of my accomplishments and awards would not have been possible without God. I truly believe that everything happens for a reason, and if it is God’s will, then it will ensue. I am so blessed that He has gifted me what He has throughout my life thus far. Getting baptized meant so much to me. I have been blessed in so many ways and having the opportunity to show that to others as an outwards expression of my inwards decision is incomparable to anything else,” Megan said. “My favorite Bible verse is Matthew 5:16: ‘In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and glorify your father in heaven’. This specific verse has always stood out to me. It’s key to remember that Christ’s light should shine through you onto others. Every child of God has the potential to be a disciple and bring others to Christ. Be a Godly influence, and let others see the commitments and decisions you make. Guide them to follow Christ with all their heart in order to glorify Him.”
Megan wants people to remember her as a kind person both in and outside of the classroom.
“I want people to remember my effort. Not only did I put effort into my personal academics and extracurriculars, but I always made an effort to pour into others, whether it was helping people with homework, making quizlets, or just giving advice and encouragement. I hope my constant endeavors always made an appearance. In a way, I also made an effort to prioritize others and make them feel ‘seen’. It is pretty easy to sometimes look past people who may not exactly be the ‘cookie-cutter’ type in this world but realizing that we are all equal is very important to remember throughout every stage of life, and that is something that I will always stand by.”
