FAIRVIEW, Ala. – May 11-17 was designated Little Free Library Week, and on Thursday, May 15, a group gathered at Fairview’s Randall Shedd Community Park to take part in a fun event called “We are the Gardeners.”

Stephanie Sprouse, who stewards the Little Free Library at the park, said she applied for a Little Free Library grant, which made the event possible.

“I was awarded a $100 gift card after applying for a grant in April and awarded for this May event, which allowed me to purchase the items needed for today,” Sprouse said. “I read ‘We are the Gardeners’ by Joanna Gaines, which inspired and educated the children in how to plant and care for a garden.”

Students from the Awakening Wonder Homeschool Group, led by Suzy Chapman, participated in the event. Sprouse said each child was given a terracotta pot and saucer to plant a periwinkle.

“Dirt was supplied to fill the pot, and boxes of free books were available for families to choose from,” Sprouse said. “Little Free Library bookmarks, stickers and information (about the) Little Free Library app were also distributed.”
