PREP SOFTBALL: Vinemont pulls away to earn 14-7 area win at J.B. Pennington; Thursday scoring recap

BLOUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Vinemont hit the road for an important area matchup at J.B. Pennington Thursday night and returned home with a 14-7 win over the Tigers. Vinemont plated five runs in the final two innings to pull away with the win.

Both teams traded runs to start out the game. Arleigh Thomason led off the game with a single, and after she stole second, Abby Kuykendall lined an RBI double to left field to give Vinemont the early lead. Kuykendall later scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. J.B. Pennington tied the game up at two in their half. The Lady Eagles quickly broke the tie in the top of the second. Thomason hit a two-out double, and Kuykendall hit her second RBI double of the game to left field, as that gave them a 3-2 lead. Bryleigh Basinger followed that up with an RBI single to put them ahead 4-2.

Tori Vines helped her own cause in the top of the third inning, as her solo home run with two outs made it 5-2. The Lady Tigers cut it to 5-4 in their half, but Thomason scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to put Vinemont up 6-4. The Lady Eagles loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, and Vines lined the first pitch she saw into right field to make it 8-4. Later that inning, Darcy Carmack’s RBI double made it 9-4. J.B. Pennington scored three runs in their half to cut it to 9-7. Vinemont put up another run in the sixth on an RBI single from Alaina Sandlin and four more in the seventh seal a 14-7 area win over J.B. Pennington.

Basinger and Vines each finished with three hits and three RBIs for the Lady Eagles, while Kuykendall (two hits) and Carmack (one hit) each drove in a pair of runs in the win.

Hanceville 11 – Holly Pond 0 (Softball)

The Hanceville Lady Bulldogs traveled to take on the Holly Pond Lady Broncos in a critical area matchup for both teams. A big second inning gave the Lady Bulldogs the early lead and a great pitching performance from Josi Jones helped lead Hanceville to an 11-0 win over Holly Pond.

After a scoreless first inning, Hanceville gave Jones some run support in the second inning. Karrigan Pipkin scored on a fielder’s choice by Lakin McBee to put them on the scoreboard first, then later that inning, Aaliyah Twitty scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Kynzlee Farr drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, and Farr, along with Alex Twitty, each scored on a passed ball to stretch the Lady Bulldog lead to 5-0. McBee scored on a passed ball to put Hanceville ahead 6-0 in the top of the third.

The Lady Bulldogs quickly broke the game wide open in the top of the sixth. Farr drew a leadoff walk, and two pitches later, Alex Twitty ripped an RBI triple to center field to make it 7-0. Jones followed that up with an RBI single to give them an 8-0 lead. Later that inning, Pipkin hit an RBI double to stretch their lead to 9-0. McBee and Zoe Pitts would later hit an RBI triple and an RBI single, respectively, to make it an 11-0 game. Jones worked around a single and an error in the bottom of the sixth to collect the final two outs of the game and help persevere the 11-0 area win for Hanceville.

McBee finished with a hit and two RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs. Jones (three hits), Alex Twitty (two hits), Pipkin (two hits), Pitts (one hit), and Farr all drove in a run in the game. Jones went all six innings to collect the win for Hanceville, as she gave up just two hits, walked two, and struck out nine. Maggie Nail and Libby Stallings collected the only hits of the game for Holly Pond.

Good Hope 9 – Danville 8 (Softball)

Good Hope struck first in their opening at-bats. Lizzy Steed led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and later scored on an RBI single by Campbell Koch to give the Lady Raiders a 1-0 lead. A two-run home run by Danville gave them a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. The Lady Hawks put up four runs in the top of the third to stretch their lead to 6-1, but Good Hope, though, responded in a big way in their half.

Kylee Smith hit a leadoff double, and on the first pitch, Koch lined an RBI single to right field to cut it to 6-2. Later that inning, Natalie Miller hit a two-run double to right field to make it a 6-4 game. Brooklyn Lambert drove in a run on a ground ball to trim the deficit to 6-5. Four pitches later, Miller scored on a passed ball to tie the game up at six. A passed ball, a single, and an error had runners on second and third with two outs, and two pitches later, Smith hit a two-run double to center field to give the Lady Raiders an 8-6 lead.

Gracie Garmon led off the Good Hope fifth with a single and a walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt, moved her over to third. She came home to score on a ground ball by Koch to put them ahead 9-6. Danville hit a two-run single in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run game. After allowing a one-out double in the top of the seventh, Addyson Burgess was able to collect the final two outs of the game, as that helped seal the 9-8 area win for the Lady Raiders.

Koch (three RBIs) and Smith (two RBIs) each finished with two hits in the game for Good Hope. Miller added a trio of hits and two RBIs, while Lambert collected an RBI of her own in the win.

Decatur Heritage 13 – Addison 6 (Softball)

Decatur Heritage struck first in their opening at-bats to take an early 1-0 lead. Addison would respond in the top of the second. Annabeth Powell led off the inning with a double, and two pitches later, Mattie Johnson hit a two-run inside-the-park home run to give the Lady Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. They added to their lead in their next at-bats. Mackenzie Carter hit a one-out triple, and Lainey Evans reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners. Powell hit a two-run triple to put them ahead 4-1. The Lady Eagles put up three runs in their half to tie the game up at four.

Addison broke the tie in the top of the fifth inning. Carter hit a one-out single and later scored on an RBI double by Powell to give the Lady Bulldogs a 5-4 lead. Decatur Heritage, though, broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth, as they batted around and scored nine runs to take a 13-5 lead. Johnson hit an RBI single to cut it to 13-6 in the top of the seventh, but the deficit proved to be too much for Addison in the end, as the Lady Eagles would go on to knock off the Lady Bulldogs 13-6.

Powell (three hits) and Johnson (two hits) each drove in three runs for Addison. Savannah Miller, Carter, and Evans all added a pair of hits, while Summer Evans, Preslei Atkins, and Katie Barrett all collected a hit of their own in the loss.

Grissom 13 – Cullman 7 (Softball)

Both teams went back-and-forth to start out the game. A grand slam by Grissom gave them a 4-0 lead in their opening at-bats, but Cullman responded in their half. A trio of walks loaded the bases with one out. One out later, Samantha Johnson lined an RBI single up the middle to make it 4-1, then during the play, an error allowed Reese Hopper and Hattie Graham to trim the deficit to 4-3. The Lady Tigers, though, put up four more runs in the top of the second to take an 8-3 lead.

Graham scored on an error in the bottom of the third to cut it to 8-4, and an error in the bottom of the fourth allowed Abby Maples to score to make it 8-5. Grissom quickly scored four times in the top of the fifth to put them ahead 12-5. Kynlei Storey hit a two-out RBI single in the Lady Bearcat half of the fifth to cut it to 12-6. Both teams traded runs in the seventh inning, but Cullman was unable to get any closer after that and ended up falling to the Lady Tigers 13-7.

Johnson (three hits) and Storey (one hit) each drove in a run for the Lady Bearcats. Presley Burden added a pair of hits, while Maples and Hopper each collected a hit in the game.

Scottsboro 10 – Fairview 2 (Softball)

Scottsboro got out to a quick start to the game, as they jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after two innings. Fairview got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning. A pair of singles by Kylie Kovar and Ayda Payne put runners on first and second with one out. Later that inning, Kayleigh Hill crushed a two-run triple to right field to cut it to 5-2. That would be their only runs of the game, as the Lady Wildcats scored the final five runs of the contest and ended up defeating the Lady Aggies 10-2.

Hill finished with a hit and two RBIs for Fairview, while Kovar and Payne collected hits of their own in the loss.

Priceville 2 – West Point 1 (Softball)

This game quickly turned into a pitcher’s duel between both teams. Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard for the first five innings, but that quickly changed once the sixth inning hit. Priceville hit a pair of RBI singles to give them a 2-0 lead. West Point got on the scoreboard in their half. Lauren Windham hit a two-out single, and after she stole second, Kortni Baker lined an RBI single up the middle to cut it to 2-1. That’s as close as they would get the rest of the way, as the Lady Warriors ended up dropping a heartbreaker to the Lady Bulldogs 2-1.

Baker finished with a hit and an RBI for West Point, while Windham, Averee Folds, and Brayley Phillips all collected a hit of their own in the loss. Bai McSwain and Zailee Love combined to give up eight hits and one earned run and walked three.
