CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Master Gardeners will host their third annual Native Azalea and Wildflower Sale on Saturday, March 22, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at  the Cullman County Fairgrounds.

Cullman County Extension Director Kira Sims, who also advises and manages the local Cullman County Master Gardeners volunteers, said this particular sale is held annually in March.

“The feature plant for this sale is the native azalea, but they also offer perennial and annual wildflowers,” Sims said. “They will offer over 15 types of flowers including purple coneflower, butterfly milkweed and blanket flower. There will also be five fern species for sale.”

Sims said the Master Gardeners host three plant sales during the year.

“This one (featuring the native azaleas and wildflowers specifically), and two general plant sales (April and October),” Sims said. “The general plant sales feature plants propagated or harvested from plants out of the Master Gardeners’ own landscapes or demonstration gardens they maintain around Cullman. The rest of their activities consist of volunteering across the county by maintaining the demonstration gardens and assisting with youth and adult education programs.”

Sims shared the Master Gardeners are Extension-trained volunteers who connect Alabamians to gardening information and educational opportunities.

”They assist the local county office with various horticulture-related events and promote gardening to other homeowners using research-based information,” she explained. “They are a valuable asset to the county through their various volunteer activities with both youth and adults.”

To become a Master Gardener volunteer, a person must complete the Master Gardener training course and obtain 50 hours of volunteer service.

“The training is offered in Cullman County during the fall (August-November),” Sims said. “Anyone interested in the program can contact me directly (kira.sims@auburn.edu), and I will add them to the interest list. When registration opens in June, those on the interest list will be notified.”

The Cullman County Fairgrounds are located at 1501 Sportsman Lake Road NW in Cullman.
