ADDISON, Ala. – The Addison Lady Bulldogs tipped off their season at home against the 5A Corner Lady Yellow Jackets Monday night and lost in a hard-fought game 44-40. Even though the Ladies from Addison dropped the game, there was plenty of reason for optimism for the upcoming season.

The first period opened with both teams struggling to find their rhythm. It was after all Corner’s second game and Addison’s season opener. In a slow paced back and forth period, Addison took the period 8-6. Addison was led by Lauryn Cunningham and Gracie Roberts who nailed a three pointer each. Katie Barrett had 3 rebounds, and the diminutive Roberts had 3 as well. Corner was led by their do all everything guard Adalyn Owens with 4 points. Kinley Willis led the Lady Jackets with 3 rebounds.

The second period was as close as the first with neither team being able to pull away from the other. Addison would score and Corner would answer right back. The period ended with both teams notching 12 points to give Addison the close 20-18 lead at the half. Roberts and Barrett each tallied 4 points for the Lady Bulldogs while Barrett grabbed 4 more boards. Corner’s Owens kept the Lady Jackets close by score 7 of their 12 points. Owens also had 3 rebounds to go with her points.

The third period had Corner winning it 11-9 and they did this by outrebounding Addison in the period 10-7. Most of Corner’s points were of the second chance variety. Owens led with 6 points while teammate Maddie Beavers tossed in a trey. Owens grabbed another 3 rebounds. Addison was led by Ava Bartlett’s 3 pointer. Addison’s Karson Wyatt and Barrett led the Dawgs in rebounding with 2 each. Going into the fourth and final period, the game was all knotted up at 29.

The fourth period was an exciting one as Corner actually built up a six-point lead at 38-32 with Willis and Beavers nailing a 3 pointer each. With the clock standing at 4:27 Corner had the lead and the ladies from Addison responded with back-to-back treys. Addison’s Cunningham started it and then Wyatt drained the second one to tie it up at 38 with three minutes to go in the game.

Unfortunately, the Lady Yellow Jackets put the clamps on Addison and the Lady Bulldogs could only score two more points in the final three minutes of the game. Corner dropped in 6 points which led to the final score of 44-40.

Addison drops to 0-1 while Corner moves to 1-1.

Addison Head Coach Bailey Boland,

“There were definitely some things that we can improve on, but this was our first game,” Boland said. “I believe that we played better in the second half than we did the first and we need to get into basketball shape. I am pleased with our overall effort, and I know once we get to bond more as a team, we will improve overall.”
