Cullman City Council names new fire chief, deputy chief

CULLMAN, Ala. — The Cullman City Council on Monday voted to name Darren Peeples chief of Cullman Fire Rescue.

Councilman Brad Smith thanked all applicants, saying, “I think we did our due diligence there, and trying to just do everything best for the city of Cullman. We’re confident in Chief Peeples, and so we’re just looking forward to moving toward the future at this time.”

Additionally, the council suspended the regular rules of procedure to create the new CFD staff post of deputy chief of administration, appointing Stentsen Ellenburg to that position.

Ellenburg commanded a unit of 1,200 personnel in the Air Force, and has worked at the Alabama Fire College since leaving military service, helping train some of CFD’s current firefighters.

The council also approved:

  • A special event request from Michael McBrayer for the annual Rock the South music festival at York Farms from Thursday, July 18, 2024, to Saturday, July 20, 2024
  • A special event request from Shirley Arnett for the annual prayer walk on the sidewalks of the Cullman County Courthouse on Thursday, June 6, 2024
  • A special event request from Bree Goodwin of Desperation Church for a church community event in Depot Park on Wednesday, June 19, 2024
  • An ordinance to annex property located at 2100 Main Ave. SW into the City limits of Cullman as a B-2 business district
  • A resolution to award a bid for light poles at Depot Park to West Cullman Electric Supply, the lowest responsible bidder, in the budgeted amount of $25,250
  • A resolution to adopt a new policies and procedures manual for utility services provided by City of Cullman
  • A resolution to apply for a fiscal year 2025 TAP grant for handicapped accessible sidewalks beginning at the intersection of Fourth Street and Third Avenue Southwest and extending south along Third Avenue to Fifth Street and then west along Fifth Street to the intersection of Fourth Avenue Southwest
  • A resolution to award the bid for pipe and materials for drainage improvements at Depot Park to the lowest responsible bidder, ADCO Pipe & Supply, LLC, in the budgeted amount of $31,112.75
  • A resolution to award a bid for stormwater pipe at Depot Park to the lowest responsible bidder, Bear Concrete Products, Inc., in the budgeted amount of $11,869.94

The council also set a public hearing on July 15, 2024, at 7 p.m. for Ordinance No. 2024-20 to amend the sidewalk regulations in the Zoning Ordinance.

The Cullman City Council meets next on Monday, June 24, 2024, at 7 p.m. in the Cullman City Hall auditorium. The public is invited to attend.
