CLAY, Ala. – The Cullman Bearcats hit the road and traveled to the home of No. 2 Clay-Chalkville for the opening round of the 6A state playoffs Friday night and unfortunately for the black & gold, the Cougars were in control of the game from the start. Clay-Chalkville led the Bearcats 42-0 at halftime and went on to win it 49-6 to advance to round two.

The Cougars scored a pair of early touchdowns to take a quick, 14-0 lead over Cullman in the first quarter and they were able to extend their advantage to 28-0 by the start of the second. Another Clay-Chalkville touchdown made it a 35-0 game early in the second quarter and the Cougars tacked on one more score before the end of the half to move in front 42-0 at the break.

Clay-Chalkville stretched the lead to 49-0 in the third and that score held for most of the rest of the game until Bearcats quarterback Tanner Gaines hit Nick Holland over the middle for a 25-yard touchdown, bringing the final score to 49-6.

Cullman finishes the season with a record of 5-6 and will lose some playmakers to graduation in May but will look to build on the momentum of this year’s playoff appearance going into 2024.
