Gamer Geeks opens in Cullman
CULLMAN, Ala. –Gamer Geeks is now open in Cullman. Owner Michael Jensen’s flagship store is in Warrior. He said he realized that nearly 40% of his customers were coming from the Cullman area, so he decided it was time to open another location.
“I was so blown away by the way that Cullman reacted to us versus the city that I’m from,” Jensen said. “(sic) They’re just so loving and excited to have a new business. We’re just a tiny nerd shop.”
The store is not just another gamer shop. Jensen said he works very hard to create a community for people with shared interests to come and feel welcomed. People come into his store to play games together and establish a sense of community. It’s important to Jensen to create an environment that showcases the positive side of the gaming community.
“That’s why we have relaxing music playing in here. Some people do have social anxiety and that gives a level of relaxation,” he said. “We have candles that we light, and we try to make it as bright and happy welcoming as possible and also premium as possible, so people are comfortable.”
Jensen said he spent extra money to provide a comfortable environment, with black leather chairs and nice wooden tables for maximum comfort during game play.
“I just want for people to know that we exist and that we’re here and they can if they’re looking for a safe place to be able to play, that they can be able to come in here and have that good environment,” he said.
Gamer Geeks also has a Discord server. Jensen said that whenever someone walks into his store asking about finding a group to play with, he hands them a card with the links to meet people on the Discord server.
Jensen said he is looking forward to hosting charity events this fall and winter. He has held them at the Jasper store and wants to give back to the Cullman community as well.
