Wynell, known to most as Grandmommy, went peacefully to her heavenly home on June 9, 2023 surrounded by family members. She was a mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend to many, but made it very clear that she was, most importantly, a child of God. She was a member of First Congregational Methodist Church of Cullman. She loved to cook for her family and she loved plants and flowers; she had the “touch” to grow anything. The family is thankful for the caring staff at Cullman Regional for the special care given to her during her final days.

Vassie Wynell Burrow was born to William J. Burrow and Armindy M. Burrow on Feb. 15, 1923. She was number ten of twelve children, nine girls and three boys! Her main role in the large family was to prepare meals for the others who were out in the fields. Her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were always so happy that she learned to prepare meals and boy could she cook!

As a young lady, Wynell married Edward Lee “Buck” Brown. They raised three sons together who went on to raise families of their own. Their youngest son was born while Buck was serving his country in the Navy during World War II and he learned of his son’s birth via telegram. Grandmommy lost her beloved husband in 1972 but has never failed to share their story with others. She saw many changes in this world during her 100 years, but she loved becoming a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother most of all. She had three children, six grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. What a legacy!

Wynell is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, first husband and father to her children, Edward Lee Brown, and late husbands James R. Lackey and Therman Blalock. She is survived by her sons: Edwin Max (Sandra) Brown, Ray (Brenda) Brown, and William Bruce (Wanda) Brown; grandchildren: Vince (Kathy) Brown, Alan (Dana) Brown, Scott (Jennifer) Brown, Beverly (Jamie) Jenkins, Kevin (Fran) Brown, and Kori (Patrick) Wiginton; great grandchildren: Katrina Brown, Michael Brown, Josh Brown, Luke Brown, Jake Brown, Max Brown, Will Brown, Drew (Ashlyn) Jenkins, Deven Jenkins, Emily Klair Brown, Amberly Brown, and Karter Wiginton, great-great granddaughters: Aria Kathryn Courtney and Chandler Jane Jenkins; nephews and nieces.

Services will be held at Moss Service Funeral Home on Sunday, June 11, with visitation at 11:30 a.m., funeral at 1 p.m., and internment at the Cullman City Cemetery following the funeral service. Funeral service will be led by Scott Brown, grandson; Brother Jason Smith, pastor; and Teddy Blalock, nephew. Grandsons and great grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
