Jacobs declares April 23-29 Relay For Life Week

CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs on Wednesday, April 26, met with members of Relay For Life of Cullman County to declare with week of April 23-29 Relay For Life Week in the city.

“Our Relay For Life folks here in Cullman do a great job at promoting cancer awareness and in raising funds to help with cancer research,” said Jacobs. “They work hard every year to put on a great Relay For Life event, and I encourage everyone to attend and support them and their efforts.”

Relay For Life of Cullman County’s Party in the Park will take place Saturday, April 29, from 5-10 p.m. at Depot Park. Honoring cancer survivors, the Party in the Park will also remember those who lost their battle with the disease. Relay For Life benefits the American Cancer Society’s research and services. PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life movement is the world’s largest peer-to-peer fundraising event dedicated to saving lives from cancer. For over 36 years, communities across the world have come together to honor and remember loved ones and to take action for lifesaving change; and,

WHEREAS, in May 1985, Dr. Gordon “Gordy” Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Washington, to raise money for the ACS. This gave him the idea of having teams participate in a 24-hour fundraising event and, the next year, 19 teams were part of the very first Relay for Life event; and,

WHEREAS, what started as one man walking and running a track has become a global fundraising phenomenon raising funds that directly support breakthrough research, 24/7 support for cancer patients, access to lifesaving cancer screenings, and more; and,

WHEREAS, Cullman has a wonderful Relay for Life community. Relay for Life of Cullman County is dedicated to fighting back as a community to end cancer; and,

WHEREAS, during the week of April 23-29, 2023, Relay for Life of Cullman County will host various events leading up to the main event – Party at the Park “A Cure Under the Big Top” on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 5PM-10PM at Depot Park. This event will feature community members, cancer survivors, and caregivers walking around a track lined with luminary bags. At sunset, the luminary bags will be lit in a special ceremony. The event will also include live music, food trucks, children’s activities, and much more; and,

WHEREAS, by dedicating a luminaria, taking part in other Relay for Life events and activities, or otherwise supporting Relay for Life of Cullman County, we can all help support the ACS’s mission to: “Save Lives, Celebrate Lives & Lead the Fight for a World Without Cancer.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Woody Jacobs, as Mayor of the City of Cullman and on behalf of the City Council and our citizens, do hereby proclaim the week of April 23-29, 2023, as RELAY FOR LIFE WEEK in Cullman and urge all of our citizens to support or participate in local Relay for Life events and activities and to get involved in our community’s fight against cancer!
