CULLMAN, Ala. – The weather was dreary, yet no less magical for opening day of new metaphysical supply shop Magickal Remedies. As its name implies, the focus of the shop includes a wide variety of crystal tumbles and towers, dried herbs and resins, a library of books to make any Sanderson sister jealous, tarot and oracle readings, and an overall welcoming atmosphere for crone and maiden alike. Generations of magically inclined people gathered to show their support for the new local business.

Owner Gerald Duren said the shop was moved from Stevenson to Cullman to be closer to family and also to diversify the religious offerings of the area. “We like to bring a splash of culture to any kind of area,” he said.

Duren was happy to share that his focus Thursday was on crystals and gemstones, as well as brightly dyed candles made of soy wax and imbued with positive intention, all of which were hand poured by Duren.

Manager Deanna Nunley was busy all morning managing the “herb wall,” a collection of dried herbs and flora that can be used for teas and tinctures, priced by the ounce. Customers lined up in the foyer of the shop to get their fill of herbal resins, dried flowers and smoke cleansing sticks. Nunley mentioned that due to the shop’s prime location and plenty of social media attention, “This is the busiest our shop has ever been. Our old location was never like this!” as she gestured to the line at the register and measuring station.

Bri House, a local Wiccan attending the opening, shared while she was perusing the mystery bag section that she was excited not only for some of her favorite religious supplies to be closer, but also for the impact the shop could have on Cullman. “I guess I’m really just excited for people to see that Cullman is more open and accepting than it used to be,” she said.
