PREP SOFTBALL: West Point opens season with wins over Falkville, Hanceville

WEST POINT, Ala. – The West Point Lady Warriors opened up their season at home Friday night and got the year started with a pair of wins. West Point handled Falkville 11-2 in its first game of the night and capped things off with an 18-3 victory over Hanceville.

West Point 11 – Falkville 2 (Game One)

Kara Jones got the start in West Point’s first game against Falkville and allowed a leadoff single. A wild pitch and two groundouts later, the Lady Blue Devils got the first run of the game. The Lady Warriors got a two-out rally started in their half. Brinlee Phillips lined a double to left field, then after she stole third, Macie Brown hit a double of her own to left field to drive in Phillips to tie the game at one. A Falkville error allowed Brown to cross the plate, then Lexi Kimbril blooped an RBI single over the shortstop to give West Point a 3-1 lead after one.

A one-out walk for Falkville saw them cut the deficit to one at 3-2 on a two-out RBI single in the second inning. The Lady Warriors added to their lead in their half as Bailey Brock hit a leadoff home run to make it 4-2. With one out, Bethany Minck hit a double to left field and would later score on a passed ball to push their lead to 5-2. Jones retired the Lady Blue Devils in order in the top of the third and the Lady Warriors quickly broke it open in their half.

Jones hit a leadoff double, then Brown, the courtesy runner for Jones, came around to score on an RBI single by Kimbril. A single by Cabri Blackwood put two runners on for Brock, who hit her second home run of the game over the center field wall to make it 9-2. Sidney Burks followed that up with one of her own over the right field fence to stretch their lead to 10-2, then the Lady Warriors would score their final run of the game as Minck scored on a passed ball. 

Brock finished with a pair of home runs and four RBIs for West Point. Kimbril added a pair of hits and two RBIs, while Brown and Burks each collected a hit and an RBI. Phillips added a pair of hits, while Jones and Blackwood each chipped in with a hit of their own.

West Point 18 – Hanceville 3 (Game Two)

West Point got off to a strong start in their game against Hanceville. Macayla Wilkins reached on a bunt single to lead off the game, then a wild pitch and a stolen base put her at third base with no outs. Another wild pitch allowed her to cross the plate for their first run of the game. Phillips and Brock each drew a walk, then one out later, Minck hit a two-run single to right field to make it 3-0. Minck would later score on a passed ball to increase the Lady Warrior lead to 4-0, then Katie Beth Yovino drove in Kimbril and Blackwood with a two-run single. A Hanceville error allowed Yovino to cross the plate and the Lady Warriors held a 7-0 lead after their half-inning.

Catie Lee allowed a two-out single to Isabella Spinks, but the next batter, Katelyn Twilley, put the ball in play and was called for batter interference, which put a quick end to the first inning for Hanceville. West Point added on to their lead in the top of the second inning. Phillips drew a leadoff walk, then Brock hit an RBI triple to center field to make it 8-0. Two pitches later, she would score on a passed ball. Another passed ball allowed Brown to cross the plate as well and Kimbril hit an RBI single. Kimbril would score on yet another passed ball, along with Yovino, Ella Minck scored on a Lady Bulldog error, Brown hit an RBI single, and Burks hit a bases-clearing double to quickly stretch the Lady Warrior lead to 18-0.

A Lady Warrior error in the bottom of the second inning allowed Hanceville to score their first run of the game, then a stolen base by Karrigan Pipken and an RBI single by Aaliyah Twitty made it an 18-3 game. They wouldn’t get any closer after that as West Point went on to roll past Hanceville, 18-3, to improve to 2-0 in the early part of the season.

Burks finished with a hit and three RBIs for West Point. Minck added a pair of hits and two RBIs. Yovino ended up with a hit and two RBIs. Brock, Brown, and Kimbril each collected a pair of hits and an RBI in the contest. Pipkin and Twitty had a hit and an RBI for Hanceville, while Spinks collected a hit of her own in the game.

West Point and Hanceville will each take on Cordova and Falkville Saturday.
