Learn all about trees

CULLMAN, Ala. – As springtime approaches, eager gardeners have the chance this week to learn about which trees are good fits for their landscapes ahead of the annual Cullman County Natural Resources Planting Committee tree sale to be held on Saturday, Feb. 18. 

On Wednesday, Feb. 15, the North Alabama Agriplex will host its monthly Lunch and Learn at noon, when aspiring and experienced gardeners alike are welcome to attend to learn characteristics and needs of trees that will be available for sale on Saturday. Call the Agriplex at 256-297-1044 to register for the free workshop, and bring your own lunch. 

From 9 a.m.-noon (or until items are sold out) on Saturday, the tree and shrub sale will be held at the Agriplex. The seedlings will be $3 each and available on a first-come, first-served basis. 

These varieties of trees will be available: 

  • Black walnut 
  • Flowering dogwood 
  • Paw paw 
  • Persimmon 
  • Red cedar 
  • Sassafras 
  • Sourwood 
  • Southern magnolia 
  • Tulip poplar 
  • White oak 

These shrubs will be available: 

  • American elderberry 
  • Beautyberry 
  • Oakleaf hydrangea 
  • Red buckeye 
  • Sweet shrub 
  • Witch hazel
