FAIRVIEW, Ala. – Both the Aggies and Lady Aggies of Fairview tipped off their area tournaments on their home court at Joe Shults Gymnasium Monday night, looking to eliminate a pair of Brewer squads and advance to their area tournament title games against Guntersville later this week. The purple and gold was able to do just that, starting the night with a 61-44 win for the Lady Aggies and in the boys’ game, Fairview wrapped things up with a 52-27 victory over the Patriots.

Fairview 61 – Brewer 44 (Varsity Girls)

The Lady Aggies put points on the board early, starting with three-pointers by Sadie Smith, Emma Garcia and Somer Harris that put Fairview in front 9-0 just one minute into the game. However, things began to slow down for the Lady Aggies after that and Brewer was able to cut the deficit to 9-8 late in the opening period. Smith split a pair of free throws to give Fairview a 2-point lead, but the Lady Patriots got another shot to fall just before the buzzer to take an 11-10 lead into the second quarter.

Morgan Lindsay sank a pair of free throws to put the Lady Aggies back in front 12-11 early in the second but a big scoring run from Brewer put them behind 18-12. That’s when Fairview put together a run of its own. Jayla Gorham scored on back to back possessions to cut the lead to 18-17 and Garcia scored the next five points of the game to retake a 22-18 lead for the Lady Aggies. Harris drilled another three to keep the run going and stretch the lead to 25-18 and with just 30 seconds remaining in the period, Garcia knocked down a mid-range jumper to put Fairview on top 27-19 at the halftime break.

Gorham got the third quarter started by converting an and-one play to make it a 30-21 game and Jaycee Aleman scored the next five points for the Lady Aggies to extend the lead to 35-26 late in the period. Harris drained another three-pointer to add to the lead and a Reagan Dunkin basket gave Fairview a 40-29 advantage going into the fourth quarter.

The shots continued to fall for the Lady Aggies in the final period. Three-pointers by Aleman and Smith along with another basket from Lindsay made it a 48-31 game with just over five minutes to play. Lindsay finished an-and one play at the line and then sank a layup on the next possession to stretch the lead to 53-38. That’s when Garcia buried back to back three-pointers to give Fairview a 59-41 lead with two minutes on the clock and officially put things out of reach for the Lady Patriots. The Lady Aggies went on to win it 61-44 and will travel to Guntersville for the area championship game Thursday night.

Garcia led Fairview with 14 points in the win. Lindsay and Harris each added nine, Aleman and Gorham each posted eight and Smith finished with seven.

Fairview 52 – Brewer 27 (Varsity Boys)

A Basket by Landon Tweedie and a pair of free throws from Cylas Yarbrough gave Fairview an early lead and Kobe Payne knocked down a jumper to make it a 6-0 game. Back to back Yarbrough baskets stretched the lead to 10-2 later in the period and after another basket by Tweedie, Bryson Chamness split a couple of free throws to put the Aggies in front 13-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Fairview added to its lead in the second, starting with a three-pointer from Cade Yeager. Baskets by Cade Arnold and Ethan Frasier stretched the lead to 20-5 early in the period and Yarbrough scored inside to make it a 25-7 game with less than two minutes remaining in the half and the Aggies went into the locker room with a 28-11 advantage at the break.

Points were tough to come by for Fairview in the third quarter. The Patriots managed to cut the lead down to 11 at one point in the third but back to back treys by Tweedie built the lead back up to 34-20 with two minutes to play in the period. Baskets by Austin Johnson and Yarbrough extended the lead to 40-20 with 30 seconds on the clock and Frasier laid one in just before the buzzer to give the Aggies a 42-20 lead at the start of the fourth.

Two more quick baskets by Yarbrough made it a 46-20 game early in the final period and Frasier added a couple baskets on the next two possessions to put Fairview in front by 30. With the hot clock running, Fairview pulled away to defeat Brewer 52-27 and punch its ticket to the area championship game at Guntersville Friday night.

Yarbrough led the way for the Aggies with 16 points in the win. Tweedie finished with 10 and Frasier finished with eight.
