PREP BASKETBALL: Good Hope collects big road wins at Holly Pond

HOLLY POND, Ala. – Good Hope hit the road to take on Holly Pond in some Monday night hoops action and both the Raiders and Lady Raiders returned home with impressive wins. The Lady Raiders put on a defensive show to handle the Lady Broncos 63-16 and Tucker Malin caught fire in the fourth quarter of the boys’ game to help the Raiders pull away and defeat the Broncos 82-47.

Good Hope 63 – Holly Pond 16 (Varsity Girls)

Ivey Maddox hit a layup to put Good Hope on the scoreboard. Holly Pond took a 3-2 lead on a Maddi Ham trey with 5:14 remaining in the opening quarter, but Bailey Tetro and Rudi Derrick nailed back-to-back shots from long range and Maddox made another shot down low to give the Lady Raiders a 10-3 lead. Kaylee Stallings stopped the Good Hope run with a shot down low, and later on, Kennedy Twilley hit a layup to cut the Lady Bronco deficit to just six at 13-7 with less than two minutes to go in the first quarter. The Lady Raiders scored the final 10 points of the quarter as a Heather Tetro three-point play pushed Good Hope’s lead to 23-7 going into the second period.

The Lady Raiders added on to their lead in the second quarter as Heather Tetro and Desire Odachowski each hit a long-range shot to make it 29-7. Later on, a Renee McLeod layup made it 35-7. Stallings hit a free throw and a layup to make it a 35-10 game, but McLeod hit another layup to push Good Hope’s lead to 37-10 and they would go into the half with a commanding 37-12 lead.

The second half was more of the same as the Lady Raiders’ suffocating defense made things very difficult for Holly Pond. Good Hope outscored the Lady Broncos, 26-4, in the second half as they rolled to a 63-16 win over Holly Pond.

Maddox led the way for Good Hope (9-2) with 19 points. Heather and Bailey Tetro each added 12 points. Odachowski finished with eight points and McLeod and Derrick each ended up with six points. For Holly Pond (3-7), Stallings finished with seven points. Ham added five points. Twilley ended up with two points, while Lauryn Hoffman and Maycie Black each chipped in with a point.

Good Hope 82 – Holly Pond 47 (Varsity Boys)

Charlie O’Neil got the scoring started for Good Hope with a layup, but Holly Pond’s Kollin Brown drilled a three to give them an early 3-2 lead. Levi Farr hit a shot down low to give the Broncos a 5-4 lead, then a Blake Rickard trey stretched their lead to 8-4 with less than five minutes to go in the opening period. The Raiders scored the next seven points, with Noah Barnette scoring five of those point, as they got the lead right back at 11-8. Another Brown trey tied the game up at 11 and both teams would be deadlocked at 13 going into the second period.

Good Hope quickly broke the tie to start out the second quarter as back-to-back baskets down low by Tanner Malin and Barnette, plus a Tyler Cone trey, gave them a 20-13 lead. Another Brown trey, though, made it a 20-18 game. The Raiders finished the first half strong as they went on a 14-3 run, with Tanner Malin scoring half of those points, to take a 34-21 lead into the locker room.

Good Hope widened their lead even more to start out the second half as Barnette drilled a three and Colton Lindsey hit a free throw and a layup to push their lead to 41-21. A Tucker Malin trey made it 45-21, but back-to-back shots down low by Rickard made it a 45-25 contest. The Raiders would go into the final quarter up by a score of 47-27.

The fourth quarter was all Good Hope as they drilled 10 threes, including six from freshman Tucker Malin. Cone, O’Neil, Jacob Haynes, and Weston Hancock each added a three of their own as well as the Raiders rolled to an 82-47 win over Holly Pond.

Tucker Malin finished the game with a game-high 23 points for Good Hope (6-3). Tanner Malin added 18 points. Barnette ended up with 14 points. O’Neil added seven points. Cone and Hancock each ended up with six points. Lindsey added five points while Haynes chipped in with three points. For Holly Pond (3-8), Brown drilled six threes en route to an 18-point night. Rickard added 12 points. Sawyer Olinger ended up with eight points. Levi Farr added six points, while Christian Couch chipped in with three points.

Good Hope will go back home to take on Fultondale on Tuesday, while Holly Pond will host Hanceville on Thursday.
