CULLMAN, Ala. – The Fishing 4 a Cure 4 ALS LLC 501c3 is a nonprofit organization began by the Harris family in honor of Danny Harris, who is battling ALS. The group hosts several fundraisers throughout the year with their main one being the annual Bass Tournament at Smith Lake in Cullman. All of the proceeds go to the Alabama Chapter of the ALS Association.

The family has set up a memorial fund in Marc Harris’ name for Fishing 4 a Cure 4 ALS. Marc passed away on November 29 from cancer. Marc was the president of the organization and was dedicated to raising money for ALS research to help find a cure. He held nine successful bass tournaments and never missed the annual Walk to Defeat ALS. Donations can be mailed to: Fishing 4 a Cure 4 ALS, Inc., PO Box 322, Crane Hill, AL 35053.

Fishing 4 a Cure 4 ALS is dedicated to raising awareness about ALS, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. With the progressive degeneration of the motor neurons, they begin to die. When the neurons die, it greatly affects a persons’ motor functions including speaking, eating and even breathing. ALS has no cure, and the exact causes remain unknown. The disease can affect anyone, although it more commonly affects males between the ages of 40-70. For unknown reasons, military veterans are more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than the general public.
