Veteran Memorial: Pvt. Joseph Bernard Fromhold

Joseph Bernard Fromhold was born August 9, 1932 in Cullman. He was a graduate of St. Bernard and was just 17 when he joined the Army. He served in the Korean War and was attached to Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. 

Fromhold was the first known casualty of the Korean War from Cullman County when he was killed in action on September 4, 1950. He was killed near Busan in South Korea. His body was returned to Cullman on August 11, 1951, arriving on the L&N train #1. Fromhold was just 18 years old and had only been in Korea a couple of weeks. 

Fromhold is buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Cullman. He is also honored at Cullman’s Veterans Memorial Park and the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C.
