PREP FOOTBALL: Vinemont tops Susan Moore in 50-42 shootout

BLOUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Vinemont traveled to Blount County to face the Susan Moore Bulldogs in a critical region matchup and the Eagles came away victorious in a thrilling, high-scoring game 50-42.

Susan Moore got the ball to start the game and with 7:39 left in the opening quarter struck first to go up 7-0. Vinemont answered with a strong dose of the run game, and it ended with a 12-yard touchdown run by Brody Speer to put the Eagles ahead 8-7 with 2:09 remaining in the first quarter.

Susan Moore answered right back early in the second quarter to go back in front 14-8. The Bulldogs pulled an onside kick and after recovering it, they capitalized with a touchdown to go up 21-8 with 8:09 remaining until halftime. Brody Speer slashed his way into the endzone from 5 yards out to make it 21-16 with 4:52 remaining in the first half. Vinemont forced a punt, a few plays later Colby Miller found Isaac Moody for a 42-yard touchdown to put Vinemont up 24-21 with just over a minute remaining until halftime. Susan Moore answered back quickly to go up 28-24 with just 26 seconds remaining in the opening half. Vinemont didn’t want to go to the locker room behind, Rush Sandlin found Colby Miller for a 12-yard touchdown on the last play of the first half to give the Eagles a 32-28 lead headed to the locker room.

Late in the third quarter Susan Moore found the endzone to go ahead 35-32. Once again, the Eagles scored on the last play of the quarter when Colby Miller scampered for a 11-yard touchdown to put the Eagles up 38-35 entering the final quarter. With 9:16 remaining in the fourth quarter a touchdown pass from the Bulldogs put Susan Moore ahead 42-38. Vinemont drove right down the field to regain the led 44-42 with 4:13 remaining in the game as Rush Sandlin found Colby Miller for a 23-yard touchdown on the fourth down. Looking to regain the lead to the Bulldogs chose to throw, Colby Miller intercepted the pass to give the Eagles the ball back with the lead. A 2-yard touchdown run by Miller put the Eagles up 50-42 with 1:41 left in the game.

The Bulldogs were on the move looking to send the game into overtime, a costly third down holding penalty left the Bulldogs facing a fourth and long to stay alive, but the pass fell incomplete. All that was left was a kneel by the Eagles to secure a thrilling 50-42 victory.

Vinemont improves 3-4 with the win and the Eagles will be back on the road to face Oakman next week.
