Veteran Memorial: Jimmy Ray Waldrep

Jimmy Ray Waldrep  

Jimmy Ray Waldrep was born December 6, 1945 in Cullman County. His parents were Carvin and Vonda Lee (Galbreath) Waldrep and they lived in the Logan community. On November 26, 1965, Waldrep entered the recruitment office and enlisted in the United States Marine Corp to serve during Vietnam.  

A biography from findagrave.com states, “After arriving in Vietnam, Jimmy was assigned to Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 26th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division. The battalion was participating in Operation Prairie and was operating in the vicinity of the An Dinh Village and 4 kilometers east, northeast of Con Thien (Hill 158), when at approximately 1708H, Bravo Company was ambushed by NVA hostiles using automatic weapons fire. Jimmy died as a result of gunshot wounds to the right side of the chest and left side of back.” 

Waldrep, a rifleman, died in the Quang Tri province, South Vietnam on September 19, 1966 and received the Purple Heart. He is now buried at Holy Ground Baptist Church Cemetery in Logan and memorialized on Panel 10e, Line 122 at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial in Washington D.C. Waldrep is also honored at Cullman’s Veterans Memorial Park.
