CULLMAN, Ala. – The Link of Cullman County will host its annual Links for Literacy Golf Tournament Monday, April 12, 2021 at Terri Pines Country Club. For you avid golfers, the event is a four-man shamble with a shotgun start, with tee times at 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. The event will also feature a special guest appearance by Miss Alabama USA Alexandria Flanigan.

According to The Link’s Director of Community Relations Melissa Betts, slots for sponsors and four-person teams are still available.

Betts added, “Or they can always make a donation to the educational programs at any point in time.”

What will the tournament support?

According to Betts, “It supports all of our educational programs here at The Link, hence the name ‘Links for Literacy.’ We thought it was catchy!

“We are rolling out a new educational program at The Link. There’ll be a soft launch this summer, with a bigger launch in August. The partnership will be with Wallace (State Community College) Adult Education. They have a new director; his name is James Price. He posed this idea to us, and it really kind of spoke to our heart, because the concept of the program had been something that we have been dreaming about for a number of years, especially our literacy coordinator Regina Roat.

“It’s a family literacy program. And what that would mean was parents could come, take anything from GED, ESL, WorkKeys training in the evening-this would be an evening programone night a week at this point. They could come and take whatever educational component they need that we will jointly offer, and the child comes and takes advantage of additional tutoring for their grade level.

She continued, “And then there’s a family component that makes this unique, that will help the parent and children understand the importance of educationgreat study habits. You know, it’ll be a different topic each week, but it will be geared toward that family unit, working together.

“We’re super excited about that partnership with Wallace State, and we’re just looking towards the future. We have increased the opportunities for tutoring due to COVID this year. We had never tutored in high school math before, and with all of the virtual learning that was going on this year, we had a huge ask for math tutors. And we have been able to step up to that challenge and find tutors.”

Because of events like the tournament, all services are free

Betts said, “All of our services at The Link, I think it’s important to say, are free to the participants. And it is not income-based; you just need to have a need for the tutoring or a need for the educational component, and register to be a part of whatever component you need.

So we’re able to do that and offer the services for free because we do things like Links for Literacy.”
