CARBON HILL, Ala. – The Holly Pond Broncos traveled to Carbon Hill for an area game Friday night, and the Bulldogs came away with a 32-8 victory.
The Broncos received the opening kickoff, but after gaining an initial first down, were eventually forced to punt, pinning the Bulldogs inside their own 5-yard line.
Carbon Hill overcame that field position, driving the length of the field for the opening score. The extra point was blocked, putting the Bulldogs up 6-0.
Lined up to kick off for the Broncos’ next possession, the Bulldogs surprised Holly Pond with an onside kick, and on the next play faked a sweep around right end, completing a half back pass to a wide open Zack Lawhorn. The two-point conversion was no good, but Carbon Hill had put up 12 points in the span of 16 seconds in the first, making it 12-0.
The Bulldogs, kicking off from their own 25, attempted another onside kick, following a 15-yard penalty. The Broncos covered the ball on the Bulldog 39.
The Broncos got their offense in gear, behind the strong running of Andrew Bell. Finding themselves on the Bulldog 11, facing third down, Landon Perkins caught a tipped ball, running it in for the only Holly Pond touchdown of the night. The two-point conversion was good.
Perkins also showed up on defense in the first half, picking off two Bulldog passes in the second quarter.
Following another Carbon Hill touchdown, the teams went to the locker rooms with the Bulldogs on top, 18-8.
The Bulldogs received the third-quarter kickoff and pounded the ball down to the Bronco 32, opening up their lead with a 32-yard touchdown pass, going up 24-8.
The last score of the game came on a 3-yard pass at the start of the fourth by Carbon Hill. Completing the two-point conversion, the Bulldogs went up 32-8, which was the final.
The Broncos fall to 1-4 and will play Sylvania next week at home.
