BAILEYTON, Ala. – The Baileyton Town Council met Monday night for the first time since early March. The meeting was held at the town’s senior center rather than town hall due to comply with social distancing guidelines, and Mayor Johnny Dyar kept the meeting short in an effort to minimize the risk to the council and guests.

Dyar informed the council that Baileyton’s tornado siren is scheduled to be repaired after reports from residents that the siren did not sound during the last round of severe weather that produced tornadoes in the county. He said some residents did report hearing sirens, but they were hearing those located in Fairview and Holly Pond.

The council said it is waiting for representatives from Cullman Electric Cooperative to assess the lights and power lines at the town park.  At its March meeting, the council said Cullman Electric Cooperative recently discovered that every four days, the concession stand power is surging during ball season. The lights at the park are on 4% and the park is at 8%.

Dyar said in March, “Somebody, when they opened up the park, they hooked the concession stand up with the ballpark. What they want us to do is run electricity from the old fire station to the concession stand and cut it loose from the ballpark and get it back to 8% instead of 4%.”

The council approved the mayor to do whatever needed to remedy the situation.

Dyar said Monday night, “It’s got to be fixed, regardless of what it costs.”

Preliminary estimates have the cost of repairs between $10,000-$12,000.

The council gave approval to Town Clerk Pat Gilbert to purchase no-touch soap and paper towel dispensers for the new town hall. It also approved the purchase of various locks needed inside the new building.

The next council meeting is scheduled for June 1 at 7 p.m.
