MONTGOMERY, Ala – The Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State Girls Basketball Teams have been unveiled and as per usual, there were several local standouts that earned All-State honors and another local coach received a Coach of the Year award. Cold Springs’ Elizabeth Hill landed on the 2A first team for the second straight season while her teammate Toni West finished on this year’s third team. Hanceville’s Kelly Pickett was selected to the 3A second team after landing on the third team last year, Cullman’s AK Eastman earned 6A third team honors after receiving an honorable mention last season and West Point’s Miriam Oldacre collected an honorable mention in class 5A.
Lady Warriors Head Coach John Welborn was selected as the class 5A Coach of the Year after West Point posted a 29-6 record this season, collected back to back county championships, swept through the area tournament and advanced to the Northwest Regional Finals. This comes just one year after Welborn’s sister, Cold Springs Lady Eagles Head Coach Tammy West, was named the Coach of the Year in class 2A.
Welborn was quick to praise those around him for this honor, crediting his players and fellow coaches for lifting the program to where it is today.
“I’ve been blessed with some great players that bought in to the program that played and worked really hard. That makes a coach look really good,” Welborn said. “Also, having a good assistant coach like Ritchie Penn helps out too.”
