PREP BASEBALL: West Point sweeps Priceville at home; Saturday scoring recap

CULLMAN, Ala. – After a week of pouring rain, Saturday brought great weather and a day packed with local softball and baseball action across the state. Some local softball teams were competing in this year’s Wallace State High School Tournament, the Cullman Bearcats finished up their stint at the Perfect Game High School Showdown and several county baseball teams were finally able to get back on the field and get some games under their belts.

West Point 2 – Priceville 1 (varsity baseball)

West Point hosted Priceville for a doubleheader Saturday afternoon and needed just three runs in the two games combined to send the Bulldogs home with a pair of losses. In game one, West Point got its first run of the game on a stolen base when Whitt Laney stole home in the bottom of the first and the Warriors added another one in the second on a Laney RBI single. The Bulldogs cut it to 2-1 in the fourth, but that would be it for them as Aubry Cleghorn and Eli Folds gave up a combined four hits and one unearned run while striking out five in West Point’s 2-1 win.

Laney finished with a hit and an RBI for the Warriors. Isaac Hoffpauir and Will Cochran added a pair of hits while Cleghorn, Brody Rusk and Branson Smith each ended up with a hit as well. Cleghorn picked up the win for West Point, tossing five innings, allowing one unearned run, just two hits and striking out five.

West Point 1 – Priceville 0 (varsity baseball)

In game two, it was more of the same as neither offense could generate much of anything, but West Point wound up getting the only run of the game in the bottom of the second when Cleghorn scored on a passed ball. Cochran, Rusk and Cleghorn each got a hit for West Point (4-7) and Cochran and Folds combined to throw a three-hit shutout. Will Cochran got the start for West Point and allowed just three hits in five innings of work. Eli Folds relieved Cochran in the sixth and tossed a pair of hitless innings to secure the win.

The Warriors will host Hamilton on Tuesday.

West Point 4 – J.B. Pennington 2 (varsity girls soccer)

The West Point Lady Warriors toppled J.B. Pennington on the road Saturday night to improve to 2-1-1 on the season. A hat trick from Grace Lee and another goal off the foot of Mallory Campbell secured a 4-2 win for West Point.

The Lady Warriors will be back on the road Tuesday to face Arab.

Belgreen 5 – Cold Springs 2 (varsity softball)

Cold Springs took on Belgreen in the Bulldog Bash at Russellville Saturday and after a scoreless first inning, the Lady Bulldogs put up five runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead. The Lady Eagles countered with two runs of their own in the top of the third after Morgan Chasteen hit a 2-run double but Cold Springs didn’t get any closer after that as Belgreen wound up taking the game 5-2. Chasteen had a hit and two RBIs for the Lady Eagles, Kyla Aaron added two hits, and Emma Black and Kylon Hamby each chipped in with a hit of their own.

Cold Springs 6 – Marion County 3 (varsity softball)

In their second game of the day, The Lady Eagles took on Marion County. Kyla Aaron scored the Cold Springs’ first run of the game in the top of the first and Chasteen hit an RBI double to make it 2-0, but Marion County answered right back with three runs in their half of the inning. The top of the fourth inning saw Cold Springs (2-3) gain the advantage as Toni West hit an RBI double and later scored on a passed ball. Crimson Gann then hit a 2-run single to make the score 6-3 and the Lady Eagles held on to win the game by three. Gann led the way with a hit and three RBIs for Cold Springs, Chasteen added a hit and an RBI and West ended up with a pair of hits and an RBI. The Lady Eagles will host Falkville on Monday.

North Jackson 16 – Cullman 2 (varsity softball)

Cullman took on North Jackson in its first matchup the Wallace State High School Tournament Saturday and it was all Lady Chiefs from the start as they put up eight runs to start the game. The Lady Bearcats weren’t able to recover from the early deficit and wound up losing the game 16-2. Carlie Burnham collected a hit and two RBIs for Cullman and Haley Shannon and Savannah Davis each added hits as well.

Cullman 5 – Athens 1 (varsity softball)

Cullman faced off against Athens in its second game of the day and a solo homer by the Lady Golden Eagles in the bottom of the first gave them the lead early, but the Lady Bearcats would answer in the second when Dayln Phillips tied the game with an RBI single. Cullman took the lead in the third when Burnham hit an RBI single, Shana Guest drew a bases-loaded walk and Olivia Britton got hit by a pitch to force home a run and make it 4-1. Aiden Adcock added a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give Cullman the 5-1 win. Phillips finished with a hit and two RBIs for the Lady Bearcats, Burnham added two hits and an RBI, Guest ended up with a hit and an RBI and Adcock added an RBI as well.

Pleasant Grove 5 – Cullman 0 (varsity softball)

Cullman (5-7) took on Pleasant Grove in its third and final game of the day it was all Pleasant Grove as the Lady Bearcats were held to just an Adcock single through five innings in their 5-0 loss. Cullman will travel to take on Southside Gadsden next Tuesday.

Pike County 1 – Cullman 0 (varsity baseball)

Cullman took on Pike County Saturday morning in what would be its final matchup of the Perfect Game High School Showdown in Hoover and it was a pure pitchers’ duel between both starters. A Cullman error later led to an RBI single by Pike County in the top of the first that made it a 1-0 game and the ‘Cats were never able to strike back, falling 1-0 to Pike Counyt. Cullman (8-4) got hits from Brady Patterson and Nick Braswell in the contest. Kaleb Heatherly gave up just three hits and an unearned run while striking out nine and walking one on the mound. The Bearcats will travel to James Clemens for a doubleheader Friday.

Ider 4 – Fairview 1 (varsity softball)

Fairview took on Ider in Day two of the Snead State Classic Saturday and the Lady Devils took advantage of some sloppy defense by the Lady Aggies take an early 3-0 lead. Fairview got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a Katie Ball RBI single to make it a 2-run game, but Ider added another run in the sixth and the Lady Aggies couldn’t chip away at the lead anymore, falling 4-1. Ball finished with a pair of hits and an RBI for Fairview while Allyson Wooten added a hit as well.

Fairview 11 – Fyffe 1 (varsity softball)

Fairview’s bats came alive in its second game of the day against Fyffe. A 3-run homer off the bat of Allyson Wooten in the bottom of the first got the Lady Aggies started early. They added runs in the second and fourth before blowing the game wide open in the fifth and Fairview run-ruled Fyffe 11-1. Ball had a huge game for the Lady Aggiess, finishing with three hits and two RBIs in the win. Allyson Wooten added two hits and three RBIs, Alyssa Wooten and Kloie Watson each ended up with a hit and an RBI and Kennedy Johnson finished with an RBI of her own. Olivia Overton pitched a complete game three-hitter while throwing just 46 pitches. Fairview (5-2) will travel to take on Good Hope Monday.

Randolph 8 – Fairview 2 (varsity baseball)

Fairview traveled to face Randolph for some Saturday afternoon baseball action and the Aggies got off to a quick start. Levi Garner drew a bases-loaded walk with no outs and Will Bailey added a 2-out RBI single to give Fairview a 2-0 lead. The Raiders took over after that, scoring the next eight runs of the game and Fairview couldn’t muster any more offense after the opening inning, dropping the game 8-2. Bailey finished with a hit and an RBI for the Aggies and Jack Brown added a hit as well. Fairview (2-2) will have a rematch with Randolph at home Tuesday.

Fultondale 8 – Holly Pond 7 (varsity baseball)

Holly Pond traveled to take on Fultondale and couldn’t have asked for a better start to the contest. The Broncos built a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but in a wild turn of events, Fultondale got back in the game behind some sloppy fielding and wild pitching from the Broncos until finally an RBI groundout gave the Wildcats an 8-7 lead. Holly Pond didn’t have an answer in the top of the seventh and wound up falling just short at the end by a run. Andy Light led the way for the Broncos with two hits and two RBIs. Hunter Farr added a hit and two RBIs, Thomas Bell ended up with a pair of hits and an RBI and Seth Widing finished with a hit and an RBI in the loss.

Carver 14 – Holly Pond 11 (varsity baseball)

Holly Pond took on Carver in its second game of the day and for the second straight contest, the Broncos’ bats came alive early as they jumped out to an early 8-1 lead after three innings. However, the Rams tied the game up with five runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Holly Pond later tied the game at 10 after six innings, but Carver countered with four runs in the seventh and the Broncos fell three runs short at the end to fall 14-11. Kyler Chaney led the way for Holly Pond (2-3) with a hit and three RBIs and Logan Leach finished with a hit and two RBIs of his own. The Broncos will host Cold Springs Monday.

Vinemont 13 – Falkville 5 (varsity baseball)

Vinemont’s offense had another big day at the plate in its first game against Falkville. Behind a huge day at the plate from Deacon Samples and contributions by a few other players, the Eagles rolled past the Blue Devils 13-5. Vinemont jumped out to an 8-2 lead and didn’t let up as the Eagles rolled to an 13-5 win. Samples finished with four hits and five RBIs for the Eagles. Travis Hopper added a pair of hits and two RBIs, Wyatt Thomason, Zander Noblett and Collin Teichmiller each ended up with a pair of hits and an RBI and Will Rhodes finished with a hit and an RBI in the win as well.

West Morgan 10 – Vinemont 0 (varsity baseball)
In its second game of the day, Vinemont took on West Morgan and the Rebels took control early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth and the Eagles couldn’t recover after that, dropping the game 10-0. Noblett had a pair of hits for Vinemont (3-4) and Colby Miller added a hit as well. The Eagles will host Douglas on Tuesday.

Ardmore 6 – West Point 3 (varsity softball)

West Point took on Ardmore to start out the Wallace State High School Tournament Saturday and the Lady Warriors trailed 3-1 after two innings. They later made it 5-3 after three, but Ardmore added another run in the fifth and West Point didn’t have an answer in the bottom half of the inning and Ardmore held on to win the game 6-3. Carlie Wilkins finished with a hit and two RBIs for West Point and Lexi Shadix added a hit as well.

Danville 14 – West Point 4 (varsity softball)

West Point faced off against Danville in its next contest of the day and Molly Pendley got the offense off to a quick start with a 2-run home run. The Hawks countered by scoring the next nine runs of the game and the Lady Warriors weren’t able to recover. Danville wound up pulling away to win it 14-4. Pendley finished with a hit and two RBIs for the Lady Warriors, Wilkins added a hit and an RBI and Gracie Thompson posted an RBI as well.

James Clemens 8 – West Point 1 (varsity softball)

West Point took on James Clemens in its final game of the day. A suicide squeeze play by Thompson in the second inning gave the Lady Warriors a 1-0 lead, but that would be all the offense that West Point could muster and James Clemens put up eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away and win it 8-1. Thompson finished with an RBI for West Point (6-6-2) and Shadix, Wilkins and Lexi Kimbril finished with one hit apiece.

The Lady Warriors will look to rebound Monday when they host Lawrence County.
