PREP BASKETBALL: Raiders, Lady Raiders split senior night matchups with Mortimer Jordan

GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Thursday night was senior night at Good Hope and both the Raiders and Lady Raiders welcomed Mortimer Jordan for a pair of varsity matchups before area tournaments tip next week. The Lady Raiders fought tooth and nail with Mortimer Jordan for three quarters but were outpaced in the final frame, falling 61-42 while the Raiders pulled away from the Blue Devils in the second half to collect a 79-66 win. The Lady Raiders will head to Fairview High School for their area tournament to take on Oneonta Monday at 5:30 and the Raiders will travel to Oneonta High School for a matchup with Fairview Tuesday at 5:30.

Mortimer Jordan 61 – Good Hope 42 (varsity girls)

The Lady Blue Devils took an early 2-0 lead in a low-scoring first quarter, but Good Hope was able to pull ahead 6-4 late in the opening period after a three-pointer from Heather Tetro. Mortimer Jordan was able to seize some momentum going into the second quarter, ending the first on a 10-0 and taking a 14-6 lead.

A layup from Bailey Tetro made it 16-8 early in the second but the Lady Blue Devils were able to get back in front by 10 midway through the second. Back to back buckets from Cayleigh Garmon cut the lead to 23-14 with just under three minutes remaining in the half and Ivey Maddox drilled a three to make it a 23-17 game at the half.

Mortimer Jordan started the second half hot, but Abbi Neighbors laid one in to stop the run and make it 29-19 early in the third. Another three from Heather Tetro trimmed the lead 29-22 around the five-minute mark and she followed it up with a steal and layup that held the lead to eight midway through the period. Savanna Derrick netted a pair of free throws to cut it to 34-29 with three minutes to play in the third quarter and Heather Tetro knocked down her third triple of the game to make it a 37-32 game. Another basket from Garmon made it 42-34 with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter and the Good Hope went into the fourth trailing the Lady Blue Devils by eight.

The final frame belonged to Mortimer Jordan. A 12-0 run to start the final period stretched the lead to 20 before Derrick laid one in to stop the bleeding and trim the lead to 54-36 with just over four minutes to play. Maddox dropped in a floater to make it 59-40 with just over two minutes on the clock and Derrick was able to score one more time but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with the Lady Blue Devils and the Lady Raiders fell 61-42.

Heather Tetro led Good Hope with 11 points in the loss. Garmon finished with eight, Derrick added seven, Bailey Tetro posted six and Maddox scored five.

Good Hope 79 – Mortimer Jordan 66 (varsity boys)

A bucket from Drew Maddox gave the Raiders an early 4-0 lead but the Blue Devils were able to rally and pull ahead 7-6. Michael Lowe knocked down a jumper midway through the first to give Good Hope a 1-point lead and Dawson Turner buried a three from the left corner to stretch the lead to 13-7 later in the period. Lowe hit another turnaround jumper to make it 15-9 with less than two minutes to play in the opening quarter but Mortimer Jordan ended the first on a big run and the Raiders led just 17-16 at the start of the second.

Good Hope began to create separation in the second quarter. A basket from Cole Maddox tied the game at 19 early in the period but Tanner Malin got a floater to fall that gave the Raiders a 2-point lead around the five-minute mark. Back to back treys from Cole Maddox stretched the lead to 29-19 with three minutes remaining in the half and his third triple of the second quarter made it 36-25 with a minute on the clock. Eli Phares pulled down a big offensive rebound and put it back through a foul with six seconds to play in the half. Phares drilled the free throw and gave Good Hope a 39-25 advantage at the break.

A pair of Cole Maddox free throws made it 43-32 early in the third and Lowe laid one in to keep the Raiders in front 47-40 midway through the quarter. Malin buried a three-pointer to extend the lead to 10 late in the period and Drew Maddox scored in the final seconds of the third quarter to put Good Hope on top 52-45 going into the fourth.

Cole Maddox scored back to back buckets to make it 56-45 at the start of the fourth quarter and Lawton Farr and Turner followed him with back to back threes that stretched the lead to 62-48. Another three-point from Farr gave the Raiders a 69-55 lead with just under three minutes to play and Good Hope pulled away to win it comfortably, 79-66.

Cole Maddox led the Raiders with 28 points in the win, followed by Phares with 12, Lowe with 10, Malin with seven and Farr, Turner and Drew Maddox each posted six.
