CULLMAN, Ala. – Need some Christmas cheer? Cullman Performing Arts may just have the answer! On Friday evening, the Cullman High School (CHS) theater group will open “Elf: The Musical,” a stage adaptation of the iconic 2003 New Line Cinema motion picture. Come watch Buddy the not-quite-an-elf leave the North Pole to reunite with his father, a cynical New York book publisher, and spread the Christmas spirit through a city dangerously short on it.

Director/CHS Theatre teacher Wayne Cook told The Tribune, “It’ll be something fun for kids and for families, and that’s part of why we’ve done it. It’s gone well. Our kids have done a great job, and we’ve just got to put the last-minute details together before Friday. But we’re getting there.”

The “wow factor”

Cook said a new feature and a big part of the spectacle of this show is the use of projected images for backdrops. Traditional stage dressing and props combine with movie theater-sized screen images for eye-catching and rapidly changeable scenery.

Said Cook, “It’s going to be fun! It’s different. It has a lot of moving parts and things, projection and stuff, so it’s kind of a different look.”

Up to the challenge of multiple productions

Said Cook, “We just have a lot going on. We’ve done two productions this fall. We did our one-act competition for (the Walter) Trumbauer (Theatre Festival), and so we worked on that. We took ‘The Hunchback (of Notre Dame’- www.cullmantribune.com/2019/11/06/chs-theatre-hosts-district-trumbauer-festival-racks-up-awards/). It’s just been a challenge to do both, but our kids have done it.”
