CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman Bearcats took on Brewer for the second time this season and both the boys and girls were looking for their second wins against the Patriots. The Lady Bearcats came up just short against the Lady Patriots, 59-57, and the Bearcats pulled away in the second half to defeat Brewer, 51-32.

Brewer 59 – Cullman 57 (varsity girls)

Cullman got five first-quarter points from Jaden Winfrey, four from Alexandria Barker and a free throw from A.K. Eastman, but Brewer drilled four three-pointers in the period and took a 16-10 lead after into the second quarter. The Lady Bearcats had five different players find the scoring column in the second period, but they still trailed the Lady Patriots 29-23 at the half.

Cullman turned up the defensive pressure to start out the second half, allowing just 10 points in the third period. Regan Quattlebaum put up seven points in the quarter, while Hannah Hoffman added four, Winfrey hit a three and Eastman knocked a pair of free throws, as the Lady Bearcats went into the final period tied at 39.

The fourth quarter turned into a free-throw shooting contest. Cullman went 7-of-12 from the charity stripe, while Brewer was near-perfect, going 18-for-20, and that turned out to be the big difference in the contest as the Lady Bearcats fell just two points short, 59-57.

Eastman led the way for Cullman (7-5) with 13 points. Quattlebaum and Hoffman each added 12 points, Winfrey ended up with 10, Barker finished with eight and Kinslee Borden chipped in with two.

Cullman 51 – Brewer 32 (varsity boys)

Cullman put together a balanced scoring effort in the opening period as five different players found the scoring column to take a 14-12 lead into the second quarter.

Cullman turned up the defensive pressure in the second, allowing just six points to create some separation between themselves and Brewer. A three-point play by Jaden Orr stretched the lead to 19-13 and a trey from Noah Bussman, plus a free throw by Tucker Gambrill, made it a double-digit lead for the Bearcats at 23-13. They wound up taking a 27-18 lead into the locker room.

The second half saw Cullman attack the paint aggressively and Brewer couldn’t find an answer for it. The Bearcats scored 14 of their 20 third-quarter points down low and added six more from the free-throw line. The defense allowed just two baskets and a free throw in the third and Cullman went into the final period up 47-27. The Bearcats went on cruise control from there, taking the game 51-32 and increasing their winning streak to six games.

Kaleb Heatherly finished the game with 12 points for the Bearcats. Jayden Sullins added nine points, Noah Bussman and Tucker Gambrill each ended up with eight points, Max Gambrill finished with six points, Robert Goolsby chipped in with five points and Orr added three points.
