PREP BASKETBALL: West Point splits home varsity matchups with Good Hope; Tuesday scoring recap

WEST POINT, Ala. – Good Hope made the trip up to West Point for a pair of varsity matchups Tuesday night and split a couple of lopsided contests with the Warriors. The Lady Warriors routed Good Hope 74-38 in the first varsity game of the night before the Raiders blew past West Point 81-56 in the nightcap.

The Warriors and Lady Warriors will be back in action when they travel to Hamilton on Friday and Good Hope will be hosting Holly Pond Thursday.

West Point 74 – Good Hope 38 (varsity girls)

Despite several early turnovers, West Point held a 6-2 lead early in this one, but the Lady Raiders fought back in the opening frame. Good Hope managed to tie the game at 12 with just two minutes to play in the first but a 7-0 scoring run capped off by an and-one play by Micah Oldacre gave the Lady Warriors a 19-12 lead going into the second.

A three-pointer followed by a mid-range jumper from Sheridan Bowers on back to back possessions stretched the West Point lead to 26-14 early in the second quarter and a three by Miriam Oldacre made it a 34-15 game with halftime approaching. Good Hope made some shots late in the period, but the Lady Warriors led the way 38-21 at the break.

West Point started the second half on a 6-2 scoring run to make it a 44-23 game early in the third, but a Heather Tetro three-pointer trimmed the lead to 46-26 midway through the quarter. Unfortunately for the Raider fans in the building, the Lady Warriors hit another big scoring run to end the quarter and took a 60-32 advantage into the fourth. Back to back threes by Bowers stretched the lead to 70-38 early in the frame and West Point pulled away to win it 74-38.

Miriam Oldacre led the Lady Warriors with 18 points in the win, followed by Bowers with 15, Lexi Shadix with 13, Molly Pendley with 12 and Micah Oldacre with eight. Braelee Quinn added six points in the win and Emily Wells added two points of her own.

Bailey Tetro led the way for Good Hope with 11 points, Ivey Maddox and Heather Tetro each added six, Rudi Derrick posted five and Cayleigh Garmon and Bobbi Johnson both finished with four.

Good Hope 81 – West Point 56 (varsity boys)

The Raiders jumped ahead to a 6-3 lead early in the opening period but a pair of free throws from West Point’s Aubrey Cleghorn kept the lead at 10-7 midway through the first. Good Hope found its rhythm after that and used a big scoring run, capped off by a Drew Maddox three-pointer late in the quarter, to take a 28-8 advantage into the second.

The Raiders continued adding to their lead early in the second quarter when a three from Tanner Malin made it a 35-12 game. A Cleghorn basket cut the lead to 20 midway through the second but a three ball from Colton Williams put the Raiders up 46-20 late in the period. The scoring run continued into the half for Good Hope and the lead was up to 53-28 at the break.

The Raiders got a lot of baskets in transition thanks to great ball movement and their fast-break offense gave West Point fits throughout the game. An and-one play by Cole Maddox put Good Hope ahead 64-36 in the third and a big layup by Drew Maddox stretched that lead to 72-41 with the fourth quarter approaching. The Raiders went into the final frame with a 77-45 advantage and with the clock running, pulled away to win it 81-56.

Cole Maddox led all scorers with 21 points in the win, followed closely by Michael Lowe with 20. Drew Maddox posted 13 points for Good Hope, Malin finished with nine, Eli phares added six, Williams collected five and Lawton Farr and Dawson Turner each finished with four and three points respectively.

Cleghorn led the Warriors with 16 points in the loss, followed by Carter Thornton with 10, Kobe Bowers with seven, Will Cochran and Jonathan Fell with six, Sam Wheeler with four, Brannon Bright with three and Mason Walls and Logan Selby who each posted two points.
