BREMEN, Ala. – On a soggy, wet night Cold Springs got the 28-8 victory over the Vinemont Eagles in this year’s regular season finale. Vinemont had an injury plagued season but continued to battle all throughout the year.
On the first possession of the game, Vinemont intercepted a Cold Springs pass to give the ball to the offense, but was unable to convert on fourth down to extend the drive. Five plays later, Ayden Alexander put Cold Springs ahead 8-0 from 8 yards out with 5:20 remaining in the opening quarter. Vinemont then blocked a punt that went out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety and cutting the lead to 8-2 with 1:48 remaining in the first.
After forcing a punt, Cold Springs got the ball back and with 8:15 remaining until halftime, Alexander scored his second touchdown of the night from 8 yards out to extend the lead to 16-2. Cold Springs looked to extend the lead by more, but the ball was fumbled out of the end zone resulting in a touchback. Vinemont then went 80 yards and ended the drive with a 15-yard touchdown run by Ayden Thomason that cut the lead to 16-8 with 38 seconds remaining until halftime.
On the third play of the second half, Cold Springs returned a fumble for a touchdown to stretch its lead to 22-8. As field conditions worsened, Cold Springs managed to add to its lead with 7 minutes remaining in the game when Roberto Ayala intercepted the ball and returned it for a touchdown. Neither team was able to find the end zone again after that and Cold Springs held on to win it 28-8.
Cold Springs finishes the season 5-5 and will likely be on the road for the first round of the AHSAA state playoffs next week, while the Vinemont Eagles finish the season 3-7 with a lot of bright spots to build on going into next season.
