Jimmie Davis celebrated his 102nd birthday Tuesday afternoon with a party at Westminster Assisted Living. Davis, the former mayor of Albany, Georgia, shared a few laughs with Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs prior to being presented with a Certificate of Commendation from the City of Cullman.
Jacobs introduced himself to Davis and said, “I understand you were a mayor a couple of years ago.”
The quick-witted Davis replied, “I was, but I’m not responsible for anything that’s happening immediately.”
Davis was born Oct. 8, 1917 in Lexington, North Carolina but lived most of his life in Georgia. He earned his law degree from Emory University and was admitted to the Georgia Bar Association 1941. He served in the Georgia General Assembly and served as attorney for the City of Albany for more than 20 years. He is also a published author and poet.
After Jacobs read the certificate he added, “The things he accomplished, he served his community well. I promise you he helped make that town because the things he served on and the things he did were an integral part of Albany, Georgia.”
Davis received more than 100 birthday cards from people around Cullman and celebrated with a beautiful cake. Staff, residents and guests said they were honored to be part of such a remarkable milestone.
Davis thanked everyone for the birthday wishes and smiled, “Stick around and y’all will have one of these one day, too.”
