HANCEVILLE, Ala. – The Hanceville City Council Thursday night passed a $4.09 million budget for FY2020. This year’s budget is a slight 1% increase over last year’s but does include the new pay structure the council put in place at its Aug. 23 meeting. Hanceville’s FY 2020 budget has projected revenues of $4.2 million and net income of $107, 750.
Mayor Kenneth Nail and the city council carefully examined each line item of the budget weighing each one to determine where the City could cut back while continuing to make improvements. Councilman Charles Wilson urged others to start looking for ways to save money so future needs, such as replacing aging fire engines, could be addressed in the coming years.
The council also held a public hearing to discuss the rezoning of Hanceville Nursing Home property.
“The nursing home purchased property just north of the nursing home towards Jack’s Hamburgers,” said Nail. “They want to do an addition up here, but it is currently zoned R-1.”
It is the intention of Hanceville Nursing Home to expand by building an additional wing to the current facility, increasing the number of private rooms. The council voted to rezone the property from R-1 (Low Density Residential District) to B-2 (General Business District).
In other business
The Hanceville Band Boosters’ request for the closing of streets in and around Hanceville High School for the upcoming Mud Creek Marching Festival Saturday, Oct. 12 was approved. According to Band Booster President Bart Absher, more than 20 marching bands are registered for the event and the University of North Alabama marching band will also perform.
This year’s marching festival will coincide with the Mud Creek Arts and Crafts Festival in downtown Hanceville. The council agreed to close the following roads Oct.12:
- Bulldog Lane at the corner of Commercial Street
- Park Street at the entrance of Veteran’s Park
- Stadium Street at the corner of Blue Bell Avenue
The council also gave Nail permission to sign a one-year contract with Avenu Insights & Analytics pending a rate negotiation. Avenu is a company that focuses on discovery and recovery of business license fees.
The next Hanceville City Council meeting is Oct. 10 at 6 p.m.
