CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) on Monday said it has received several reports of scammers calling from the 319 area code claiming to be with the Social Security Administration. The calls are targeting senior citizens.

“The scammer will claim the potential victim owes back pay on their social security and needs to refund the money or the scammer will shut off the victim’s social security,” said a media release from the CCSO.

“We just want to try and get the word out to citizens, mainly our seniors who are targets of this crime, that the U.S. Government nor the State of Alabama will ever call you to solicit money over the phone. That’s not how it works,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry.

The CCSO encourages to citizens to warn family members who are senior citizens who might be targets of these types of scams.
