ADDISON – The Addison Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs hosted Sumiton Christian in Thursday night basketball action. The girls won a defensive battle, while the boys fell in the nightcap.

Both teams struggled out of the gate. Isabellah Machen scored the first point of the game for either team, and Lexi Jackson hit a layup for the Lady Eagles' first basket. Zana Aderholt made it 5-0 with a layup of her own. Addison struggled with turnovers and bad shot selection for most of the first quarter, but that ended with a Kaylee Brummett basket at the 3:05 mark for the Lady Bulldogs' first points of the game. Their offense started to pick it up for the last part of the quarter, with two baskets by Macey Butler, and Brummett hit a shot right before the buzzer to give the Lady Bulldogs an 8-6 lead after one.

They carried that momentum into the second quarter, as they started a 9-3 run with an Allie Townsend free throw; Brummett nailed two from behind the arc, and Destiny Walker hit a layup to give Addison a 17-9 lead. The Lady Eagles' Darrell Brown nailed her second three of the quarter to cut it to 17-12. Addison went 4-of-8 from the charity stripe to keep Sumiton Christian in the game, but the Lady Bulldogs went 3-of-4 from there to end the quarter up 22-14.

The third quarter was a big struggle for both teams as a combined six points were scored: two field goals and two free throws, and Addison went into the final quarter up 25-17.

Butler pushed the Addison lead to double-digits on a layup. After a free throw by the Lady Eagles' Amber Hayes, Brummett hit a layup to push the lead to 29-18, and Walker's layup upped it to 31-18. But sloppy play by the Lady Bulldogs allowed the Lady Eagles to get back in the game. Behind threes by Hayes and Jackson, a layup by Aderholt, and a Jackson free throw, the Lady Bulldogs saw their lead cut to 31-27. A Brummett free throw made it a 32-27 game. After a Butler free throw, Hayes banked in a three from the right wing to make it a 32-30 game with 33 seconds remaining in the game. After a Butler free throw with 26 seconds remaining, the Lady Bulldogs played big on defense, and forced a missed shot. Butler clinched the game with two from the line to win, 35-30.

Brummett finished the game with a double-double: 13 points and 12 rebounds. Butler had 12 points, six rebounds and three steals; Brianna Chandler finished with a game-high 15 rebounds.

After their third straight win, the Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-1 on the season.

Addison stayed close in the first quarter, but turnovers, bad shot selection, and balanced scoring by the Eagles were too much for the Bulldogs after that, as they fell, 70-43.

Addison got off to a slow start on both sides, falling behind 6-0 quickly before Logan Wilkins scored the Bulldogs' first basket of the game with two minutes coming off the clock, but the Eagles kept the pressure on, spreading the ball around and getting balanced scoring, as they took a 12-2 lead.

After a Will Short three made it 20-6, Addison made a mini-run to get back in the game, and Wilkins jump-started it, hitting a pair of free throws; Braxton Preuitt hit a layup, Jake Blackburn added another one from the line and Caleb Crider hit a layup to cut the deficit to seven at 20-13 after one.

Blackburn added a layup in the second to make it a 20-15 game, but then layups by Preston Sharpston and Judson Laird pushed the Eagles' lead to nine at 24-15. A 7-0 run by the Bulldogs, highlighted by three free throws by Preuitt, and layups by Tyler Borden and Nick Rice, made it a 24-22 ballgame. But sloppy turnovers by Addison turned into a 15-1 run for the Eagles, who turned a close game into a 35-23 lead at the half.

Addison did not get out of the double-digit hole in the second half, and wound up falling, 70-43.

Wilkins led the Bulldogs with 11 points, nine rebounds, and added a block. Blackburn finished with nine points and added a steal, and Preuitt had seven points and a steal of his own. The Bulldogs are 1-2 on the season. They will host Meek in a big region game Friday night, their second of four straight home games.
