CULLMAN – As temperatures keep rising, many people are looking for ways to beat the heat. As a way to keep people cool and help families in need, the Cullman Wellness & Aquatic Center held its annual Christmas in July food drive today. Visitors who brought in one non-perishable food item enjoyed 50 percent off admission for the day.

The annual event draws huge crowds to the center, leading to hundreds and even thousands of pounds of canned food, dried pasta and other non-perishables being donated to the Cullman Caring for Kids United Way food bank every year. One lifeguard remarked that the conference room, where the donations are kept, is usually overflowing with cans and boxes, while the pool area is packed with visitors.

With Christmas decorations around the outdoor pool area, holiday enthusiasts enjoyed nonstop jolly music while they swam, floated, dove and hung out. If that wasn't enough to get people in the holiday (in July) spirit, the act of giving to those in need certainly was for many.

Cullman Parks and Recreation has not given an official tally of how much food was collected today.
