Can you say brain freeze? Festival-goers compete in an ice cream eating contest.

CULLMAN – Crowds turned out today for what has been seen for many years as the official summer kick-off event for the area: the Smith Lake Park Memorial Day Weekend Festival.

The festival, organized and presented by Cullman County Parks and Recreation, featured entertainment from several local artists such as Kyle Kimbrell, the duo Zach & Cheyloe, Sam Edwards, Ben Myrick and Trey Lewis. Other entertainment included an ice cream eating contest, a game of tug-o-war and a water balloon throwing competition. Festival goers vied for free passes to the park’s swimming pool.

Surrounding the concert area was a circle of vendors from around Cullman County. Guests picked up plates of local favorite Mad Dog Mike's BBQ nachos, bounced around in games of Knockerball soccer and bought fidget spinners from several of more than 20 booths. Local businesses and organizations got the opportunity to make money while also advertising their goods services; one corner of the area brought the county fair a little early with fairway balloon-popping games and a dunk tank.
