Feb. is National Heart Month: Cullman Regional to host seminar, give free heart disease screenings

CULLMAN – According to Cullman Regional, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in Cullman County. February is National Heart Month, and the hospital is hosting several events, including free heart disease screenings, as well as an informative lunch-and-learn program.

Free heart disease screenings will take place on Thursday, Feb.  9, Thursday, Feb. 23 and Thursday, March 23, by appointment only.

Who should have a heart screening? Here are some points to consider:

  • Are you worried about having a heart attack?
  • Are you over the age of 50?
  • Do you have high cholesterol?
  • Does heart disease run in your family?

The free heart disease screenings will include the following tests:

  1. Lipid panel/glucose
  2. Body Mass Index
  3. EKG (Electrocardiogram)
  4. Blood pressure
  5. ABI screening
  6. Bone density screening

A heart disease lunch-and-learn program/seminar will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 15 in Cullman Regional’s Colonel Cullman Room in the Community Education Center in Professional Office Building 2.

Cullman Regional’s cardiovascular team-  Dr. Silvio Papapietro, Dr. Edward Mahan, Dr. Mir Varquez, Dr. James Lee and Cardiovascular Services Director, Carla Fewell, RN, will be on hand to discuss the importance of heart health and answer questions.

The program will begin at 11:30 a.m.  Cost of the lunch-and-learn program is $5 for Healthy Life members and $8 for others. Call 256-735-5600 to register.
