HANCEVILLE – Wallace State Community College’s Future Foundation recently introduced a new option for supporters to help meet the needs of students working toward completing their educations. Fund a Need offers supporters a breakdown of specific needs students can face each semester. These needs range from basics such as food and gas to assistance with tuition and fees.

“We see many students who are very close to reaching their goal of earning a degree but for one reason or another need a little help to finish,” said Suzanne Harbin, director of advancement at Wallace State. “Even if it’s just a $25 donation for the student dining plan or an emergency gas card, every little bit helps those students who sometimes choose between one need or another to make it through the day. We had one student who walked two hours to and from campus to make it to classes. Can you imagine how helpful that emergency gas card would have been for him?”

The list of items for which supporters can choose to “Fund a Need” include the aforementioned Student Dining Plan and Emergency Gas Need at $25 each and continue with Book Scholarship for $250, Dual Enrollment Course for $450, 14 Credit Hours Tuition/Fees for one Semester for $2,000 and 28 Credit Hours Tuition/Fees for Two Semesters for $4,000. General donations are also accepted.

Harbin said many of the students they assist are students who don’t qualify for traditional financial aid offered through federal funding but still need some assistance. Some are students who are no longer eligible for federal funding, but are only a few credits shy of completing their education.

“It’s such a shame when we see students who have worked so hard come so close to their goal but can’t complete it simply because of the lack of funding,” Harbin said. “That’s an easy thing to fix with the help of kind and generous supporters who recognize the value of investing in a student’s dream.”
