West Point takes 1st place in county middle school volleyball tournament

HANCEVILLE – No. 1 seed West Point went through the Cullman County Middle School volleyball tournament Tuesday without losing a set, taking the tournament championship.

The Lady Warriors started their quest of being the best in tournament play, eliminating No. 8 seed Good Hope in straight sets 25-13, 25-8.

Up next was a semifinal battle with fourth seed Cold Springs. Two hard fought games were presented to the Lady Warriors, but coach Brittany Sams' squad rose to the occasion and won 25-19, 25-15 to move on to the championship round.

The opponent would be No. 2 seed Holly Pond. Given a good test in the quarterfinals, the Lady Broncos shook off a hard challenge by No. 7 seed Parkside 25-19, 25-22. These were the two closest games in the opening round.

Holly Pond met Fairview in the semifinals. The Lady Broncos were able to defeat the No. 3 seed 25-21 and 25-19 to put the top two teams from the middle school division into the final round.

West Point swept the Lady Broncos 25-18, 25-17 thanks to solid play in the match from Annalyse Cole, Kaitlyn Cornelius, Sasha Hunter, Kyla Kilpatrick, Sydney Sellers and Lexi Shaddix.

The Lady Broncos earned a berth to the title round behind the play of Tate Duke, Mattie Earl, Sarah Finley, Makenna Folds, Kaylee Stallings and Kennedy Twilley.

Up next in the county tournament will be the junior varsity division on Thursday at Lane Horton Gymnasium.

Play begins at 2 p.m. with No. 4 West Point meeting No. 5 Hanceville on Court 1 while No. 3 seed Holly Pond has a battle against No. 6 Good Hope on Court 2.

At 3 p.m., 2nd seed Cold Springs faces No. 7 Vinemont on Court 1 while top seed Fairview takes on the winner of West Point-Hanceville. That will be played on Court 2.

The second semifinal will be at 4 p.m. between the winners of Cold Springs-Vinemont, Holly Pond-Good Hope on Court 1.

The championship is slated to start at 5 p.m. on Court 1 in the best of a three-game series.

Fairview was 6-0 to draw the top seed from county regular season play with Cold Springs 5-1, Holly Pond 4-2, West Point 3-3, Hanceville 2-2, Good Hope 1-5, Vinemont 1-5.

The varsity segment of the county tournament is Monday and Tuesday on the Hanceville campus and will be a double-elimination format.
