CULLMAN – Thursday was a busy night at Heritage Park in Cullman; balls were flying, runners were jogging and a crowd was gathering for the first free Concerts in the Park event this month.

Shelby Williams, athletic director at Cullman City Parks and Recreation, as well as the park manager at Heritage Park, was glad to see that as many as 100 people attended the first event in the series of live performances scheduled every Thursday in September. “It’s just a great way to spend time in the park and to listen to good music,” said Williams.

Danielle Middleton of Cullman came to the event because she, “enjoys music, nature and the weather is perfect.” She says she plans on attending all Concerts in the Park events and says she regularly attends events hosted by CP&R. “It’s nice to have free events to come to and enjoy,” she said.

The crowd tended to be a bit older, but that didn’t hinder Taylor Quick, 22, of Cullman or Nick May, 24, of Birmingham. Quick said, “I wanted to see what this event was about.” She says she saw the event advertised. “I thought it would be a fun event to do and neat to see what it was.”  The pair, who expressed their love for Heritage Park, say they plan to attend all of the concerts.

Thursday’s music of choice was bluegrass, performed by Michael and Jennifer McLain of Nashville, Tennessee, who are close to celebrating their 20th year of marriage and showmanship. “We love to be a part of an event like this because we can connect with people and there’s a large amount of activity in the park,” stated Michael McLain. Both come from musical families and are musicians full time. They are part of a larger band with Dan Kelly and Kori Caswell who were not present Thursday evening. The group was invited by Williams to kick off the Concerts in the Park series.

The Concerts in the Park Series, free to the public, is every Thursday in September at the Heritage Park recognition gardens from 6-7:30 p.m.
