CULLMAN – The Cullman County Extension Office will be riding in style at this year’s Farm Y’All Festival in a brand new Mobile Food Kitchen. The unit, which measures 8 ½ x 16 feet, was purchased through a series of grants.

The Mobile Kitchen will be utilized for demonstrations and as a teaching facility. It comes equipped with a television screen which allows the audience outside to see and hear the demonstrations without crowding together at the window.

The unit will debut this weekend at Saturday’s Farm Y’All Festival in Cullman. It will be stationed near the Festhalle Market Platz office.

Extension Agent Assistant, Raydonna Sims, will be on hand to demonstrate the process of making and preserving apple butter. The demonstration starts at noon and lasts for one hour. The program, dubbed ‘Canning With the Best of ‘Em’ is for people interested in learning more about the art of canning and preserving fresh fruits and vegetables. The demonstrator will offer samples of the finished product, served with homemade bread.

The Mobile Food Kitchen comes equipped with state-of-the-art appliances; a six-burner gas stovetop, complete with griddle, a large oven and prep sinks. The three-compartment prep sink has the capacity to hold a multitude of items. A hand-washing station is also available.

A refrigerator and a free-standing ice-maker were incorporated into the design. The sleek Mobile Food Kitchen is a wonderful way to ‘take the show on the road,’ making it available to schools, for use at the county fair and at events like the Farm Y’All Festival.

“We are also working with the EMA to use the unit in the event of emergencies, like the April 27, 2011 tornadoes,” said Extension Agent Coordinator, Tony Glover. “We will be able to deploy this facility in a very short time if an emergency arises.”
