HANCEVILLE – The City of Hanceville held a regular city council meeting on Thursday evening, where Hanceville City Police Officers Lt. Brannon Hammick and Deputy Chief Adam Hadder were recognized for their work on a case from Murfreesboro, Tennessee involving a national auto theft ring.

“I realize that Hanceville is a small police department, but I can’t see why we can’t be one of the best smaller departments in the state of Alabama,” said Hanceville Police Chief Bob Long as he discussed the case worked on by two of his officers; citizens in attendance could be heard shouting “Amen!” from across the room.

The case involved a national car theft operation where the accused was able to remove the vehicle identification numbers (VINs) from cars and use a device to create fake VINs to sell the stolen cars across the United States. Some cars were from as far away as California and Texas. A letter from Lt. Tom Sissom of the Murfreesboro Police Department expressed Murfreesboro’s gratitude for the assistance of the Hanceville Police Department.

In other business, a payment of $14,450 was made to cover the costs of the City’s 2015 audit, to Segroves & Brewer, P.C. of Cullman. All bills payable presented to the council were paid as presented, with all members voting in favor of the motion to pay and one abstaining. The council was then able to discuss the costs associated with AirMedCare, which provides the City of Hanceville with emergency air transportation. The total cost of service that the council approved paying was $3,419.50.

Council member Charles Wilson brought up the water situation in the city. The City plans to put solar panels on the sewer plant in order to “cut the electric bill by half,” at the plant with “green money” set aside by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The Hanceville water plant “produces 4.8 million gallons” of water while the city purchases “7.3 million gallons from the City of Blountsville.”

Hanceville Fire Chief Rodger Green cordially invited everyone to a Swamp John’s dinner this Saturday the 27th.

The council will canvass Hanceville’s municipal election results on Tuesday, Aug. 30 at noon.

The Hanceville City Council’s next meeting will be on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
