VINEMONT — Between the second quarter and the third quarter, the Holly Pond Broncos could not be slowed down scoring wise by the Vinemont Eagles.

In this span, a total of 51 points were scored by the Broncos with Holly Pond running away from Vinemont Tuesday night 78-40.

Mitch Morris had to be pleased with the offensive production. The Broncos attacked the Vinemont basket for 20 points during the second period and broke open a competitive game.

In the third, the onslaught was on display with the Broncos getting 31 points. During the second and third, the No. 2 team from the 3A state poll scored 21 field goals, six of them from three-point land and had nine to get their name into the scoring column.

That added up to the Broncos’ fifth consecutive victory, finishing off their assignments for the upcoming Cullman County tournament with a 6-0 record and a No. 1 seed.

Holly Pond is now 3-0 in 3A, Area 10 and hopes to wrap up the regular season area title by the end of January.

Leading 15-8 after the first, the Broncos were given a challenge by the Eagles until the final 3:00 of the second stanza. Holly Pond scored 11 straight, with seven coming on three field goals from reserve guard Landen Walker.

A 24-15 lead for the Broncos grew to 35-15 and the game at that time was well in the hand of the visitors.

In the third period, the starters netted 23 points on 10 field goals, three treys and got some good bench help with three-pointers from Caleb Jones and Jed Hardman.

That enabled the Broncos to deliver 31 for the quarter and take a commanding 66-31 lead with one period left to be played.

Five Broncos would have double figure honors for this game as Griffin Morris scored his 15 in the third quarter. Drew Jones joined Caleb Jones with 11 while Walker and Bailey Smith netted 10.

Hardman ripped for eight on three field goals, two of them treys during the second half.

Vinemont fell to 3-7 as Garrett Boland scored 12, Corbin Barnett hit 10. The Eagles are 1-2 in the area standings.
