BIRMINGHAM – Walmart announced this week it expects to hire approximately 1,500 associates at more than 100 stores in Alabama over the next few months to help during the busy holiday shopping season. The Alabama hires are among the 60,000 seasonal workers the company estimates it will add nationwide.

Walmart is hiring for positions throughout its stores, with a focus on those jobs that will help customers during the peak shopping times. Those jobs include cashiers, stockers, and sales associates. Every temporary associate will earn at least $9 an hour, with others, depending on store and job, earning more.

Current associates who want to work additional hours during the holiday season are given priority.

“Walmart will have more associates in our stores working more hours this season, all with a focus on providing service and convenience to our customers,” said Judith McKenna, chief operating officer for Walmart U.S. “We will continue our ‘Checkout Promise’ by having more registers open during peak shopping times, helping customers save time by getting through our lines quicker.”

The seasonal hiring will continue through December. Many of those hired during the holiday season will go on to permanent positions at Walmart.

“We know some of these hires are looking for a short-term opportunity to earn extra Christmas money, but for many, this could be the start of a career,” McKenna said.

“In fact, we have hundreds of store managers who started with the company as a seasonal associate. Last year, more than half of our seasonal associates stayed with Walmart in a permanent role after the holidays.”

The company employs more than 37,000 people in Alabama at 140 Walmart and Sam’s Club stores.
