UPDATED: Inmate captured; alleged girlfriend taken into custody

RANDOLPH COUNTY – Saturday, May 23rd, 2015, at approximately 12:53 p.m. Inmate Joshua James Lay, 37 years old, of Vinemont, AL, was captured within 17 hours by the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) in Randolph County, AL. 

Also taken into custody was his alleged girlfriend Nona Faye Baker, 33 year old, white female, of Clay County who assisted Inmate Lay by picking him up and leaving the detention center.

“I would like to thank all the personnel of the sheriff’s office and other law enforcement agencies who worked nonstop last night and earlier today to assist in this capture,” said Sheriff Matt Gentry.

Inmate Lay was hiding in a heavily wooded area of Randolph County. As CCSO and the Department of Corrections K9 Tracking Dogs began to close in on his location, Lay turned himself over to Sheriff Gentry along with deputies from CCSO and the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office. 

Inmate Lay will be facing a charge of Felony Escape 1st. He was currently being held in the Cullman County Detention Center for Probation Violation and Receiving Stolen Property 2nd.

Ms. Baker will also be facing a felony charge of Permitting or Facilitating Escape 1st.

Sheriff Gentry would also like to thank Sheriff David Cofield of Randolph County for his assistance last night and earlier today.
