Cullman came out on top of the leaderboard Thursday at the Cullman Golf Course in the Girls’ Pre-Sectional event. The Lady Bearcats outperformed two schools they will see next Tuesday in the AHSAA Section 2 Tournament at CGC, Benjamin Russell and Hartselle.

In a matchup of the fourth members on Cullman and Benjamin Russell’s teams, Savannah Adams of the Lady Bearcats finished the day with an 18-hole score of 93 while Ann Marie Wendling from the Lady Wildcats carded a 107.

That gave Cullman the top prize based on the three scores that counted, taking out the highest score of the 4-team field. Brandi Ruehl was on top for the Lady ‘Cats with an 88 while Bailee Ponder finished with a 95.

For Benjamin Russell, Hayden Scales had the lowest score with an 87 followed by Makenzie Chapman’s 89.

Hartselle’s Beth Ann Compton compiled the best individual score on the afternoon with a 1-under par 71. Landen Turner had a 102 for the Lady Tigers while Jordan Winchester scored a 122.

Vestavia took fourth place with a 402. Leading the Lady Rebels was Laurel Combs with an 89.

A seventh grader from Athens, Ally Williams, shot a 3-over par 75 and finished four shots behind Compton in the individual category.

Abby Parks from Briarwood Christian shot 9-over with an 81 while Cullman County tournament champion Lindsey Rodgers from West Point was tied with Jaycey Nail of Clay Chalkville and Holly Clark from Athens with a 93.

The Section 2 Tournament is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 9 a.m. at Cullman Golf Course. Weather problems could factor in on whether the tournament will start on schedule or not.

Possible severe weather is to be in the area on Monday when CGC is to host the 1A-2A & 5A boys sectional tournaments. The 3A sectional boys featuring county champion Holly Pond, Hanceville and Good Hope, who is led by county 3-time champion Eli Marty, will play the same time the girls’ sectional is set.
