GOOD HOPE, Ala. – Parker Johnson rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown, Karson Hollis added two rushing scores and Good Hope shut out Fairview 21-0 Friday night at James W. Shabel Stadium for its sixth consecutive victory.
The Raiders built a 14-0 halftime lead and added a touchdown early in the fourth quarter in the Class 4A, Region 8 matchup. Good Hope improved to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in region play, while Fairview fell to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in the region.
Fairview received the opening kickoff, but a holding penalty on its first play helped stall the drive and forced a punt. Good Hope then put together its first scoring possession. Johnson opened with a 9-yard run, and Web Buchanan added another 9-yard gain for a first down after a false start and an incomplete pass.
Johnson later connected with Ayden Young for 15 yards to move the chains again. He kept the ball on the final two plays of the drive, finishing with an 11-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
Conner Scott found Collin Nelson for 9 yards on Fairview’s next possession. A bad snap set the Aggies back, but runs by James Short and Scott produced a first down. Another penalty stalled the drive, however, and Fairview punted.
The Aggies forced a Good Hope punt before the first quarter ended, but another Fairview punt returned possession to the Raiders. Johnson gained 29 yards on the first three plays of the ensuing drive, including a 20-yard run.
A Fairview penalty on fourth down extended the possession. Johnson followed with a 10-yard gain and later carried the ball to the 6-yard line. Hollis scored from there to give Good Hope a 14-0 advantage.
Fairview’s final possession of the half included an 8-yard completion from Scott to Weston Tankersley and a Good Hope penalty on fourth down that kept the drive alive. Another penalty against the Aggies set them back, and the Raiders forced a turnover on downs to preserve the halftime lead.
Good Hope opened the second half with runs of 11 and 12 yards by Johnson, a 4-yard completion from Buchanan to Young and a 5-yard gain by Hollis. A bad snap later stalled the possession, forcing a punt.
Scott helped Fairview move into scoring position with a 9-yard run on third down and a 37-yard gain down the right sideline. The Aggies reached the Good Hope 20, but the Raiders again forced a turnover on downs.
Good Hope’s next scoring drive included two third- and fourth-down conversions through the air. Johnson found Young for 26 yards on third-and-6, then connected with Kayden Collins for 18 yards on fourth-and-5 later in the possession. A 15-yard run by Johnson moved the ball to the 10, and Hollis scored on a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter to make it 21-0.
Fairview continued to seek its first points, but Good Hope repeatedly stopped the Aggies on fourth down. Hagen Reese recovered a Raider fumble to give Fairview another opportunity, and Scott converted a fourth-and-1 with a short run. The possession nevertheless ended with another turnover on downs.
After Good Hope also turned the ball over on downs, Fairview’s final opportunity ended with an incomplete fourth-down pass.
Johnson finished with 145 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. Hollis added 31 rushing yards and two touchdowns, while Young caught three passes for 45 yards. Scott finished with 65 rushing yards and 44 passing yards for Fairview, and Reese recovered a fumble.
Both teams return to region play Friday, Oct. 16. Good Hope travels to Cherokee County, while Fairview hosts Crossville.
