CULLMAN, Ala. – Cullman County seniors are being encouraged to break out the dirndls, lederhosen and German-inspired attire as the Cullman County Commission on Aging prepares for Senior Day at Oktoberfest on Friday, Oct. 2.

The annual celebration will begin at 10 a.m. at Depot Park in Cullman and will feature music, food and a lineup of new contests and activities designed specifically for the county’s senior community.

Organizers are giving participants plenty of advance notice this year, particularly for those who want to compete for the title of best dressed.

“Now is the perfect time to start planning your Oktoberfest look,” the Commission on Aging shared. “Pull out your dirndl, lederhosen, or get creative with your own festive German attire for a chance to take home the winning prize for best costume.”

The costume contest is one of several competitions planned for Senior Day.

Men and women will compete separately in stein-hoisting contests to see who can hold a traditional stein aloft the longest. Seniors will also have the opportunity to participate in a chicken dance contest and show off their vocal abilities during a yodeling competition.

This year’s celebration will also introduce a new Oktoberfest tradition with the crowning of the first Ms. Senior Oktoberfest.

Live entertainment will be provided by the Good Bellows Band.

A free lunch sponsored by Walmart will be offered during the event, and transportation will be available to the first 600 seniors.

The Commission on Aging said the expanded lineup is intended to give seniors additional ways to participate in one of Cullman’s signature annual celebrations.

“Get creative and bring your Oktoberfest spirit,” organizers said. “We can’t wait to celebrate Senior Day with you.”
