FAIRVIEW, Ala. – A longtime Labor Day tradition will return to Fairview on Monday, Sept. 7, when the Fairview Lions Club hosts its annual Labor Day celebration at Randall Shedd Community Park.
The community celebration will begin at 8 a.m. at the park, located at 649 Wesley Ave. N, and will include the annual car show, a parade, live music, food trucks and vendors, along with a cornhole tournament.
The car show is scheduled from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., while live music will be performed from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The cornhole tournament is set to begin at 10 a.m.
The annual Labor Day parade will begin at 11 a.m.
Parade participants will begin lining up at 10 a.m. on Butler Park Road in Fairview. All area fire departments are invited to participate and bring a fire truck, and children taking part in the parade are welcome to throw candy along the route.
The celebration continues a Fairview tradition that stretches back decades.
The Tribune reported in 2022 that the Fairview Lions Club’s Labor Day parade had already been held for more than 25 years. The accompanying car, truck and motorcycle show was added years later and had continued to grow alongside the parade and other family activities.
The event has traditionally brought together fire departments, community organizations, Fairview students, churches, families and other participants for a parade through the community before activities continue at the park.
In 2019, The Tribune reported that the parade included fire trucks, the grand marshal, Miss Fairala, the Fairview High School marching band, youth football players and cheerleaders, churches and other community participants before making its way down Wesley Avenue to the park.
That year, then-Fairview Lions Club President William Criscoe described the celebration as an opportunity for the organization to give the community something it could enjoy together.
“It’s just a small, close-knit community and we enjoy the times that we can do something like this,” Criscoe told The Tribune following the 2019 celebration.
The park itself has a connection to the event’s history. During the Fairview Lions Club Labor Day celebration in 2017, the community park was officially renamed Randall Shedd Community Park in honor of longtime Fairview resident and former Alabama Rep. Randall Shedd.
The Lions Club has historically used proceeds from its events to support its community projects and residents in need. Previous Tribune coverage has highlighted the organization’s work assisting local families and supporting service projects throughout the Fairview area.
